Winona Ryder has spent decades in the film industry, coming a long way from when she was the youngest person on set. While she's always been a cinephile, Ryder has noticed that not many of her younger co-stars from the new generation share the same interest in classic cinema.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Ryder spoke of her frustration with the apathy young actors have for quality films of the past. There are exceptions, as she noted. Stranger things co-star Finn Wolfhard is a huge Elliott Gould fan, something she takes pride in. In contrast, other young actors seem to be very unenthusiastic when given movie recommendations, often mocking the running time.
“I don’t want to sound so desperate,” Ryder explained. There are some who are simply not interested in movies.. Like, the first thing they say is, “How long does it last?”
Like, the first thing they say is, “How long does it last?”
Ryder opened up a bit more about these frustrations in an interview with Esquire. She said she “cried” on the set of Stranger things after seeing that none of the show's child stars knew what a vinyl record was. Music is one thing, but Ryder reiterated how much it bothers her when people who are actually in the film industry feel the same way about movies. She noted how sometimes her co-stars can see her nagging them to watch old movies as condescending, even though she insists she's just trying to be helpful.
“I just think social media has changed everything, and I know I look old,” she said. “I'm very aware of that. And part of me is like, 'Man, am I like vaudeville at this point?' Like [elderly lady voice]”Hey guys, turn down the music!” But I think there was so much abundance: the history of cinema, the history of photography, it's so rich, and there's so much there, and I don't mean we should go back, but I hope and wish that the younger generations will study this topic.”
Millie Bobby Brown went viral for her disinterest in movies
Ryder may have been referring in part to Stranger things co-star Millie Bobby Brown. In a recent interview, Brown went viral for revealing that she doesn’t like watching movies. Her comments are similar to what Ryder is emphasizing in her new interviews, as Brown herself said she always has to ask how long a movie is when she’s given a recommendation.
“People come up to me and say, 'You should definitely watch this movie, it would change your life,'” Brown said in the interview. “I say, 'How long do I have to sit there?' Because my brain and I don't even like to sit for my movies.”
