The magical world of Harry Potter sheds light on the complicated socio-political dynamics of this cosmos. The main conflict of the series lies in the great philosophical divide between pure-blood wizards and Muggles. Some of the oldest wizarding families believe that magic should only be enjoyed by those born to other witches and wizards. Other pure-blood families, however, such as the Weasleys and the Longbottoms, understand that Muggle-borns are sometimes born with magical abilities and should be given the tools to develop their powers.
This terrible conflict, which has been the basis of some of the most violent wizarding wars, has understandably earned some families in the Wizarding World a very bad reputation. Names like the Malfoys or the Blacks inspire fear and hatred throughout the wizarding community. For this reason, Harry was surprised to discover that the Blacks, a family with horrible traditions, were related to the Weasleys, the best family he had ever known. However, as Sirius explains, not everything is black and white and the world is not divided between good people and Death Eaters.
Septimus Weasley married Cedrella Black and together they had Arthur Weasley
The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, as they like to call themselves, has existed for several centuries and are proud to say that all of its members are pure-blood witches and wizards. Grimmauld Place, Sirius' childhood home, reflects the cruel conventions of this family, such as hanging the heads of their former House-Elves on the wall. Funny enough, the family is related to some of the most iconic “blood traitors” in the wizarding community: the Weasleys, through one Cedrella Black, daughter of Arcturus Black II and granddaughter of Phineas Nigellus Black, one of Hogwarts' less illustrious headmasters.
Septimus Weasley and Cedrella Black apparently died before Ron went to Hogwarts, or were not very close to Arthur and his family. Neither of Ron's paternal grandparents appear in the books, which is odd. They are not even mentioned by Ron or any of his siblings.
Cedrella Black married Septimus Weasley, which caused her to be exiled from the family tree.Even though Septimus Weasley was a pure-blood wizard, his family was known for defending Muggles even during that time (around the 1930s). Cedrella was, in fact, Arthur Weasley's mother, making her the grandmother of the Weasley siblings, including Ron and Ginny. Cedrella was a cousin of Pollux and Arcturus Black, who were the parents of Walburga and Orion, who married and had Sirius and Regulus. This would make Ron and Sirius third cousins, meaning they are related to some extent.
Additionally, Molly was politically related to the Black family, if not biologically. Her paternal uncle, Ignatius Prewett, married Lucretia Black, who was the sister of Orion Black, Sirius' father. This means that Lucretia was Sirius' paternal aunt and Ignatius was his step-uncle. So Sirius and Molly are connected by their uncles' marriage. However, Lucretia and Ignatius had no children, so that's the end of that family connection.
Long before Harry and Ginny got married and had Weasley-Potter children
Because many pure-blood families insist on marrying other pure-bloods, most pure-blood families in the wizarding world are related in some way, including the Potters. In the Black family tree, there is a Charlus Potter, who married Dorea Black, and together they supposedly had a sonVery little is known about the Potter family tree, but no Potters other than Harry and his family are mentioned in the books, so it is likely that Charlus is related to Harry.
Although Charlus Potter had a child with Dorea, he was probably not very close to James Potter. When James and Lily died, Dumbledore said that the Dursleys were Harry's only family, so that would mean that any relationship he had with Charlus Potter was long gone, perhaps because it was too distant, or because the family line died out at some point.
Charlus, of course, is not James Potter's brother because James was stated to be an only child. Charlus could, however, be James's uncle. Since Dorea was born in 1920, she presumably married someone around her age. Fleamont Potter, James's father, was born at least before 1909, so Charlus could very well be his brother. If this is true, it would mean that James Potter and Arthur Weasley are somewhat cousins by marriage, but not entirely. While Harry and Ginny would not be related, they could share a common relative, Dorea and Charlus's son, who would be their second cousin.
A particular name in the Black family tree seems to suggest it.
The Longbottom surname also appears in the Black family tree, with Harfang Longbottom, who married Callidora Black. This is not all that surprising, as the Longbottoms are also a pure-blood family, despite their noble intentions. In fact, they seem to have been more neutral about their Muggle ideology because their name was not erased from the Black family tree. Surprisingly, Harfang was not burned after Frank fought in the First Wizarding War, not even out of spite for the Longbottom name. However, Neville and Harfang's relationship may be so distant that it's hard to name it. Harfang and Callidora had a son and a daughter. Neville's father was Frank Longbottom, son of Augusta Longbottom, who married a Longbottom man.
Augusta Paciock's birth name is unknown, but she is a pure-blood witch, so it is likely that she is related to the Blacks or other pure-blood families.
Since Neville also had a great-uncle, his grandfather's brother, Algie Longbottom, this would mean that Harfang was not Neville's great-grandfather, as that implies he had two sons. Probably, Harfang was Neville's great-grandfather's brother, which would create no real connection between Neville and the current Blacks.like Sirius, Bellatrix and Narcissa.

Almost all families in the wizarding world are connected
Pure-blood wizards always want to marry other pure-blood wizards.
As Sirius explains to Harry, every wizarding family in Britain is connected in one way or another because they prioritize marrying into other pure-blood families. Since there aren't many choices for pure-blood families, the pool of marriage options becomes smaller. Some pure-blood families marry their relatives, like Sirius' parents, who were second cousins.
Draco Malfoy is also a Black, and is a second cousin of Sirius and Regulus. Narcissa Malfoy (née Black), Draco's mother, is the daughter of Cygnus Black and sister of both Bellatrix Lestrange and Andromeda Tonks. This, for example, makes Nymphadora Tonks and Draco Malfoy cousins, which is also very surprising.Of course, Andromeda and Nymphadora do not appear in the Black family tree, because Nymphadora's father is a Muggle.
The Sacred Twenty-Eight were a group of 28 wizarding families who were considered pure-blood during the 1930s. They included: Abbott, Avery, Black, Bulstrode, Burke, Carrow, Crouch, Fawley, Flint, Gaunt, Greengrass, Lestrange, Longbottom, Macmillan, Malfoy, Nott, Ollivander, Parkinson, Prewett, Rosier, Rowle, Selwyn, Shacklebolt, Shafiq, Slughorn, Travers, Weasley, and Yaxley.
People may also recognize other names in the Black family tree, most of them associated with dark wizards. This is because, usually, only dark wizards prioritize marriage into other pure-blood families with the same values. Cases like Cedrella Black are exceptions and will result in banishment from the family tree.
There's Violet Bulstrode, who is probably related to Millicent Bulstrode, a ruthless Slytherin during Harry's time at Hogwarts. There's also Lysandra Yaxley, who is possibly something of Cobarn Yaxley, one of Voldemort's Death Eaters. Ursula Flint, who could be something of Marcus Flint, Chaser and Captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team at one point. Irma Crabbe is also probably Vincent Crabbe's great-aunt or something similar, so Draco and Crabbe could also be related.
Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter also share lineage
The Slytherins and Peverells joined their families at some point in history
While Harry and Voldemort are definitely not related, they do share lineage. As the son of Merope Gaunt, Tom Riddle is the culmination of many generations of Gaunts, who were previously related to the Slytherins and, of course, Salazar Slytherin, the reason Tom Riddle was the Heir of Slytherin.
Cadmus Peverell and Ignotus Peverell, together with their Antioch Peverell, were the three protagonists of
The Tree Brothers' Tale
a story about how they tried to cheat death.
The Slytherins and the Cadmus Peverell family branch merged at some point, and Harry is very distantly related to Ignotus Peverell.the original owner of Harry's Invisibility Cloak and the younger, more intelligent brother of Cadmus Peverell. This means that Harry and Tom Riddle have a Very distant common ancestorthe Peverell parents are siblings, but that would be a generation gap of at least a thousand years. It is more likely that they have a common relative closer to home, but no one would know that.
