Unity has released a new tech demo showing what is possible with the latest version of the Unity 6 engine, called Time Ghost. This demo features spectacular visuals and graphics, so be sure to check it out.
My only criticism of this tech demo is the character animations. For some reason, the people run and walk like robots. Their movements don't seem natural. At least to me. And no, these animations don't come close to what we've seen even in commercial triple-A games.
That being said, the Time Ghost Tech Demo looks incredible. Unity 6 will also have new hair rendering that looks amazing. The hair shown here is by far the best I've ever seen. The environments also look stunning. Not only that, but it seems that Unity has made major improvements to the LOD system. It's not as good as what UE5 does with Nanite. However, it's still better than what we saw in Unity 5.
The developers said the demo uses the latest upgrades in HDRP, better lighting with APVs, scenario blending, and smoke lighting. It also runs faster thanks to improvements like the GPU Resident Drawer.
In addition, Unity used machine learning for cloth deformation. The ML model was trained with 2,000 frames of vertex animation, reducing the data from 2.5 GB to a 47 MB model. This enables deformations in just 0.8 ms per frame.
For anyone wondering, this tech demo is not available for download. I suspect we might get it in the future. After all, Unity has released almost all of its tech demos so far. For example, in 2022, the team released the Enemies Tech Demo. Then, in January 2020, Unity released the full version of its The Heretic Tech Demo. In March 2019, we got the Unity Engine Megacity Tech Demo. And in 2018, we got the Unity Engine ADAM Tech Demo.
While the tech demo looks top-notch, I'm not sure game developers can keep up. I mean, we haven't even seen a Unity-based game that looks as good as the previous tech demos. Remember Heretic? Yes, no Unity game looks as good as this one. And that tech demo was from 2020.
Finally, Unity will launch Unity 6 on October 17th.
Have fun and stay tuned for more!
