Tokyo Xtreme Racer is returning after 18 years, with a new game coming to Steam next year

I recently wrote about a game that aimed to recreate the old magic of Tokyo Xtreme Racer , a series of late-night, urban racing games that hadn't had a new (non-mobile) entry in 18 years. Oh, what a neglected niche those indie developers were filling!

Yes, a new Tokyo Xtreme Racer has been announced by original developer Genki, and it's aiming to release on Steam next year.

Here's a trailer featuring logos from previous games:

The new entry is simply called Tokyo Xtreme Racer and there's not much else we can learn from its Steam page.

“Tokyo Xtreme Racer is a racing game set in a closed-off future Tokyo, where you race customized cars for top speed on the highways that wind through the city, aiming to reach the top,” the description reads. “Drive real cars on meticulously recreated courses, compete against powerful opponents, outsmart other cars, and engage in soul-crushing battles. This is a series with a unique appeal.”

It's interesting, because Tokyo Xtreme Racer was mostly a feel, and at least some of that feel came from PS2-era graphics. Emulating that aesthetic in its sharp-edged polygons and drum-n-bass soundtrack is part of what makes Night-Runners Prologue so strong. I wonder if, modernized, with a less identifiable style but still limited budget, Tokyo Xtreme Racer would have looked relatively lifeless.

But the Steam page says to wait eagerly for more information to be released, and so am I. Can someone revive Racing Lagoon next time?
