Beetle Juice Director and Hollywood icon Tim Burton discusses the future of his other fan-favorite films.
Speaking to Collider, Burton was asked if there was another film in his vast catalog that he would like to develop a sequel for. Burton responded, “No. In fact, I think I would say the opposite, in a funny way, because I've done it a little bit..” Burton continued, “I feel like if I were to do something next, I don't know what I'd do, but I want to do something where… I kind of stopped making movies after my last one because It just didn't seem like a whole lot of study to me..”
Actually, I think I'd say the opposite, funny enough, because I've done that a little bit.
Burton continued to talk about his work on Netflix's Addams Family reboot, Wednesdaystarring Jenna Ortega, and how the project revitalized her professional spirit. “So, I went away and did a TV thing — Wednesday in Romania — just to clean up, so to speak, or re-energize,” Burton explained. “I had no burning desire to do the sequel or anything, I just wanted to do This film. So, I think I've recalibrated how I'm going to approach things in the future.”
Tim Burton Returns to the World of Beetlejuice
Beetle Juice Beetle Juice is set to bring back original stars Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara and Michael Keaton, each of whom will reprise their roles from 1989 Beetle Juice. The film will introduce Ortega's Astrid, the daughter of Ryder's Lydia, who finds herself drawn into the world of supernatural ghosts and ghouls during a trip home to Geena Davis and Alex Baldwin's Barbara and Adam Maitland. Burton has previously spoken about the absence of Davis and Baldwin's characters in the sequel, noting that he was “focusing on something else” during development. “A sequel like this, it's really about time. That was my starting point, the three generations of mother, daughter, granddaughter. And that [would] be the nucleus of everything. I couldn't have done that personally in 1989 or so.”
Beetle Juice Beetle Juice is also set to introduce Monica Bellucci as Delores, the demonic ex-wife of Keaton's Betelgeuse. “Delores is a true villain, and more than anyone else, I think of her as a creature,” Bellucci said of the role. “What I liked about her is this duality, because she's dangerous, but also funny at the same time. Tim [Burton] came to me and said, 'There was a key role in this movie that I thought of you for,' and I was very happy to take it and play it. Because, to me, Delores is a metaphor for life, because we all have emotional scars, and she's full of scars, but she's strong. She's coming back.”
Beetle Juice Beetle Juice will hit theaters on September 6th.
