If you’re a fan of rhythm games and fun bops, then you might want to add the old Hyperbeat to your favorites. Set in a wireframe world, you’ll need to slice, dodge, or ride notes as you propel your “hyperknight” through a tunnel at high speed. There’s a subtle, dreamy story element to your musical journey, complete with confusing dialogue and a beautiful cherry tree. Hmmm, I wonder. Well, yeah, it looks great.
Rhythm game fans will tell you that Hyperbeat is similar to many other rhythm games. To me, it's a mix between Rez, where you float around in a stylized, polygonal world, and Osu!, where you click, hold, or follow circular rhythms that appear on the screen. In Hyperbeat, you do a little of both, determined by the color and shape of the rhythm you're about to collide with. It seems to be all about guiding your knight gracefully through the rhythms and making the right decisions to keep the forest or electronic melodies flowing smoothly.
There's not much else to go on at the moment, sadly. All it says on its Steam page is that it hosts an original soundtrack with a “progression system”, whatever that means. Workshop support is a great touch – these types of games thrive on people's creations. And the difficulty and accessibility options mean it won't be insurmountable, hopefully.
The only bit of story we saw that caught my attention was a sad looking tree telling us not to forget to rest. Congrats my friend.
There's no release date for this one, but it's expected to be out sometime this year. You can track it down on Steam if you'd like.
