In the 25 years since the film's release, the themes of The matrix have been widely discussed by fans and experts through various books, podcasts, and more. The term “Matrix” has also become widely used as a way to describe false reality. A quarter century after the film was first released in theaters, The matrix is perhaps more relevant than ever in 2024, given the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and the further questioning of what is real.
Now, YouTuber Jessie Gender joins the ongoing discussion with an unmissable video essay titled “Glitch Identity.” The video tells the roots of The matrix together with the “redefining the Cyberpunk narrative genre filled with hackers, robots and dense philosophical musings – a genre in which Matrix protagonist Keanu Reeves is firmly cemented.” The video can be watched below, while more of Jessie Gender's videos are available on YouTube.
Matrix Returns to the Big Screen
There will be all-new footage for fans attending the Fathom Events re-release. The matrixThe screenings will include a special documentary titled Down the Rabbit Hole: Reflections on Matrixwith series star Jessica Henwick (Bugs) sharing previously unseen reflections on the 1999 film in a previously unreleased interview.
Keanu Reeves gave a memorable performance in The matrixwho leads the cast as Neo. The film also starred Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano. The matrixwhich tells the story of a computer programmer who discovers he has been living in a simulated reality, was a huge success upon its release in 1999. It earned more than $467 million, making it the highest-grossing film for Warner Bros. that year. The success led to multiple sequels, including two released in 2003 with a third due in 2021.
Screenings at the Fathom 25th Anniversary Event The matrix will be held in over 900 participating theaters across the United States. Thursday, September 19 screenings will be at 7:00 p.m., while Sunday, September 22 screenings will be at both 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Of course, these are the local times for each theater showing the film.
