20. “Lost in the Funhouse” (X-Men Annual #11)
As the X-Men navigate a magical maze, Wolverine is the only one who can escape, in this extraordinary annual story by Chris Claremont, Alan Davis and Paul Neary that tested the limits of Wolverine's healing powers.
19. “The Game of Death” (Wolverine v2 #90)
After being on the loose for far too long, Professor X has brought in the sadistic killer, Sabretooth, in an attempt to rehabilitate him. Wolverine has been away from the team at this point, struggling with the adamantium that Magneto had extracted from him. So, in Wolverine #90, when Wolverine returns to the X-Mansion, well, as you might imagine, he is sorry to see Sabretooth there.
This fight (written by Larry Hama and drawn by Adam Kubert, Mark Farmer, and Dan Green) is probably most notable for the fact that it was perhaps the first time Wolverine actually sprouted his third claw after doing the part where he puts his two side claws around a person's head and then says something like “Don't make me give you the third claw” (the third claw is in the center, so it would go through the person's head, of course). He used to do that a lot in the 90s, but he never sprouted his third claw. Well, in this fight, he actually sprouted his third claw!!
Meanwhile, Sabretooth also wants to fight Wolverine, but he can't because he's held down by a force field. However, being extremely tough, Sabretooth manages to get through the force field, but Logan is waiting for him. They brawl and Sabretooth talks a lot of nonsense. The comic came out with foldout pages, allowing artist Adam Kubert to really let loose on the fight scenes.
Finally, Wolverine has Sabretooth at his mercy with the claw routine, and Sabretooth taunts him by saying that Wolverine better kill him, because if he doesn't, Sabretooth will kill someone Wolverine loves (as he has done so many times in the past). The book ends with Wolverine popping the third claw with the awesome “SCHLIKT!” sound effect as reality collapses and the Age of Apocalypse begins (we later find out that Wolverine has basically lobotomized Sabretooth, but because he has a healing factor, Sabretooth eventually heals).
18. “Rage” (X-Men #139-140)
Wolverine dons a new costume in this two-part series from John Byrne, Chris Claremont and Terry Austin, and also reveals some interesting new aspects of his character to his good friend Nightcrawler.
