The Crow to be available for free streaming after the reboot flops in theaters

The crow It's a story that's been reimagined many times, but for some fans, nothing will ever top the 1994 adaptation. For those who would rather watch the first film than the latest retelling, fans will soon have the chance to revisit the classic film for free three decades later.

Starring the late Brandon Lee in the lead role, The crow will begin streaming for free on Pluto TV in September. The film’s arrival on free streaming comes as the new reboot starring Bill Skarsgard is struggling in theaters. Directed by Rupert Sanders, the reboot was a box office flop, earning less than $11 million worldwide in its opening weekend; the film had a budget of $50 million, not including marketing costs. Making matters worse for the reboot is its reception from critics, who have bombarded it with negative reviews, with a current score of 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The original 1994 adaptation remains the most popular installment in the franchise and is the only one with a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Compared to the reboot's 20% score, the 1994 film stands out with a score of 86% along with a 90% audience score. The film has maintained a strong following over the past three decades, still highly regarded as a cult classic, and this made the 2024 adaptation controversial from the start. Many fans made it clear on social media that they did not want to see James O'Barr's classic story get a new adaptation, believing that Eric Draven's character should be buried in honor of Brandon Lee, who died during the filming of the film.

The Crow is based on a comic book by James O'Barr

The crow draws inspiration from the original comic book series by James O'Barr. David J. Schow and John Shirley wrote the screenplay for the film. It tells the story of Eric Draven, a rock musician who returns from the dead to seek revenge after he and his love, Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas), are brutally murdered. The film also starred Rochelle Davis, Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, Bai Ling, Anna Levine, and David Patrick Kelly.

The new adaptation was supposed to keep the door open for a possible launch of a new franchise. Leaving the ending open was actually one of the doubts Bill Skarsgard had with his version of The crowas he was hoping for a more definitive conclusion. Either way, it doesn't seem likely that the new film will get a sequel in light of its box office performance. Some fans may want to skip the film altogether and go rewatch the 1994 version when it hits Pluto TV.
