The Cast of 'Nightmare on Elm Street' Retraces the Legacy of Freddy Krueger

It's been nearly four decades since fans discovered the unique terror of Freddy Krueger A Nightmare Deep in Elm StreetTo celebrate the milestone, actors Heather Langenkamp and Robert Englund, who played Nancy Thompson and the dream-invading killer, respectively, reflected on the character's legacy.

Speaking to ComicBook, the actors discussed how Freddy would fit into the social media age.“I almost think it's impossible to have a scary character with social media, because by the time you've already brought out the scary side, there are about 100 memes of you being ridiculous, and they found a way to humiliate you, so I don't know if Freddy could still exist today,” Langenkamp said.

I like the idea of technology being used as a tool in a horror storytelling.. I think I'm a sucker for that,” Englund explained. “I just think there are probably better ways to do it than the mythology of Nightmare on Elm Street. I would almost like to see a prequel to Nightmare on Elm Street where we see Freddy going to prison, go to court, courtroom drama. He gets away with it, and the lawyers could be really interesting, the characters could be really seedy.”

Could a Freddy Krueger prequel story work?

Englung elaborated further, saying: “Freddy comes down. He rejoices on the steps of the courthouse. It's not Freddy yet, he's not burned yet, and whoever that person is, we're going to get more information about him, his wife, and his son, and what a twisted soul he is.. And make it a little retro. Set it in the late '70s or mid-'70s in a suburban world where there's a seedy disco on the corner or something. I could see that happening.”

When asked if the film is still unsuitable for young children, Englund said it depends on the specific child. “The stakes have been raised in horror, sci-fi and fantasy films,” the actor explained. “Kids are watching game of Thrones. There are some serious things in game of Thrones AND, Nightmare on Elm Streetwhich we still remember as controversial, is rather mild, relatively speaking, compared to some of the new things out there. So I think you'd be safe at 12.”

Written and directed by Wes Craven, A Nightmare Deep in Elm Street follows a group of teenagers tormented by a killer named Freddy Krueger who can kill people through their dreams. “After investigating the phenomenon, Nancy begins to suspect that a dark secret kept by their parents may hold the key to unraveling the mystery,” the official synopsis reads. The cast also includes John Saxon, Ronee Blakley and Johnny Depp.

A Nightmare Deep in Elm Street will be released digitally and via the Max streaming service on October 1. A 4K Ultra HD version will be available for purchase on October 15.
