System Purge: Hollowpoint is a maddening platformer, but a good kind of maddening

Alice Bee (Rest in Peace RPS) wrote about the platformer System Purge a while ago and said that the game stars a witch who makes a nice leap. So I tried the demo of its sequel, System Purge: Hollow Point, and I can confirm that the witch still makes a good splash. I'm grateful for this because if the witch didn't make a good jump the game would be maddening in a bad way. Don't get me wrong, it's still maddening. Only in a good way. Hops are good.

System Purge: Hollow Point is a challenging platformer where you play as a witch, a bit like the bipedal My Little Pony. Right at the beginning of the story, your lover seems to be turning into a terrible pile of twigs, as is often the case. You, the pony witch, go to a mysterious facility and decide to find out why this is happening. And you do this by jumping through its corroded, metallic interiors and avoiding the many traps it brings.

We're talking about floors that flash red like jaws and then shoot upwards. Or floating red orbs that hang from the ceiling and explode on contact. A gust of green wind can then blow these orbs around, turning them into the equivalent of swinging chandeliers whose bulbs are mines. There are also underwater sections where you have to swim and fight for air bubbles whenever possible. If you die against any of these, you will start that level from scratch.

It's a terrible time. But in a good way if you like challenging platformers that are all about precision. Yes, there are times when the emphasis on trial and error can get a little frustrating. Still, I thought the demo levels provided a nice progression from small jumps to larger, riskier jumps.

You can find the demo on Steam.
