Superman's death is almost imminent Superman and Loisas intended by its creators.
Following the release of a new season 4 trailer, showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher spoke to Entertainment Weekly about adapting the infamous Superman/Doomsday brawl and making it feel like a true extension of their DC Universe. “When it was announced that season 4 was going to be the last, it was like, 'Ok, we can really lean on Doomsday, we can do our own version of Death of Superman' . It all worked out in a weird way in a really beautiful way. It's just sad that it had to be the last season,” Helbing revealed.
He also pointed out that, similar to Superman's decades as a fictional icon that sparked a public backlash over his disappearance in the 1990s comics, Superman and Lois' the story “had the benefit of having 43 episodes where you saw Clark Kent and Lois Lane and her family and her community and all these characters, so you really fell in love with them. It has an impact that it might not have if you did it in a movie and didn't have 10, 15, 20 hours of story with that character.”
The battle between Superman and Doomsday ended with a cliffhanger in the season three finale, which revealed that Doomsday is Clark Kent's Bizarro doppelganger, mutated by Lex Luthor's experiments. The impact of Superman's death on his friends and family, according to Fletcher, will tie together “every character and the themes of the show in it. We thought we had a really good take that was impactful, emotional and surprising. From episode to episode, there are a lot of big surprises that are exciting for an audience member, but there's also a lot of emotion.” Meanwhile, the trailer previewed Lois Lane and her kids discovering Clark's body, Jonathan Kent trying to be a vigilante, more of Luthor's plans, and the Kent family discovering something with the potential to “save” Clark.
