Ryan Reynolds on Cutting Rob McElhenney's Cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine

Deadpool and Wolverine It's a film filled with many exciting cameos, but not all of the planned appearances made it into the final cut. There was one sequence that included It's always sunny in Philadelphia stars Rob McElhenney, a good friend of the Deadpool actor, but was not seen in the theatrical cut of the film.

While the film was in production, Reynolds revealed that McElhenney would have an unnamed role in Deadpool and Wolverine. After the film's release, McElhenney took to social media to comment on his deleted cameo, joking that his theater must have received the wrong version of the film to show, since he didn't appear in it. In a new Instagram post, Reynolds shared some insight into the real reason he had to cut his friend's cameo from Deadpool and Wolverineexplaining that the scene was simply meant to be for narrative purposes during the editing process. However, Reynolds did share details about McElhenney's cameo as a TVA soldier and teased that the footage might one day be seen on the home media release.

“When you edit a film, you say 'sometimes you have to kill your loved ones.' And with a heavy heart (and through a great deal of outside intervention) I had to kill a darling with this cameo…,” Reynolds’ Instagram post reads in part. “The sequence didn’t work as we originally constructed it. Rob was the only reason he stayed in the cut all this time.because even beneath a TVA mask and helmet, you can feel him burning with a raw, near-infinite reserve of talent, writerly wit, and “I make hit TV shows” swagger. Don't even get me started on Wrexham. I wouldn't know a love like that [Wrexham AFC] if it weren't for Rob McElhenney.”

The sequence didn't work as we originally conceived it.

Reynolds added: “I really enjoyed making this movie, but it wasn't stress-free. There was a lot of expectation, and I'm pretty sure the best-written villain in the history of cinema is 'Expectation.' And when you're doing stressful things, it feels good when you have friends around you. And while I'm mortified that he flew all the way to London for a cameo that wasn't planned, I'm grateful that my friend was there with me on that set. When I see Rob, my heart rate slows and my nervous system stops screaming at me. He shows up for people. And he showed up for me.”

Rest in Peace, TVA Soldier by Rob McElhenney

*As he begged for his life before Alioth grabbed his unsuspecting body out of the air, swallowing him whole, digesting him and eventually turning him into Alioth poop,” Reynolds also spoke about the cameo itself, adding, “RIP TVA soldier.”

Deadpool and Wolverine is currently showing in theaters.
