With seven years in the making, Ron and Hermione are one of the longest slow-burn fictional relationships in history. With their constant bickering yet loving relationship, many saw this couple coming from the very beginning of the Harry Potter series. Ron and Hermione didn’t always get along, but through the years, they built a charming, loyal, and wholesome friendship — of course, with its highs and lows. Around the fourth installment of the franchise, it becomes obvious that Ron and Hermione have romantic feelings for each other, but it takes them four years to finally admit it.
Despite their various conflicts, Ron and Hermione care deeply for each other. Ron was always willing to get in fights to protect Hermione and Hermione showed her affection through small gestures, such as helping Ron with his homework. Hermione also spent a lot of time in the Burrow with Ron’s family, which made the two even closer, especially when Harry wasn’t around. Their relationship became more complicated as they got older, especially since both are incredibly stubborn, but they eventually figured it out — even if it took a whole war for them to acknowledge their feelings.
Ron and Hermione’s Friendship Begins
Ron and Hermione Go from Enemies to Friends in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Ron and Hermione interact for the first time in the Hogwarts Express when Hermione asks students if they’ve seen Neville’s pet frog, Trevor. Hermione notices Ron trying to do magic and becomes interested. But soon enough, it turns out Ron’s spell is a fake, despite his pure-blood family. Hermione is clearly intelligent, but she also shows a self-righteous side that immediately puts Ron and Harry off.
When the Golden Trio is sorted in Gryffindor, Hermione has a hard time making friends. Ron particularly dislikes her, because he considers her an “insufferable know-it-all” as Hermione keeps raising her hand in class, receiving praise from teachers, and correcting her classmates. The tension between the two grows when Hermione catches Harry and Ron out of bed and ends up almost getting in trouble.
- Hermione Granger was born on September 19, 1979, and was almost 12 years old when she started her first year at Hogwarts.
- Ron Weasley was born on March 1, 1980, making him six months younger than Hermione.
Things get worse when Hermione tries to help Ron with his performance of the Wingardium Leviosa spell. The latter feels humiliated, which contributes to his dislike of the young girl. Ron complains about Hermione to Harry without realizing she can hear him. Hermione’s feelings are hurt, and she spends the whole day crying in the bathroom.
However, everything is about to change for Ron, Harry, and Hermione. When Professor Quirrell announces there is a loose troll close to Hermione’s bathroom, Harry and Ron spring into action to save her. The three fight the troll and surprisingly defeat him. When Professor McGonagall scolds the Golden Trio for their recklessness, Hermione blames herself, cementing a long-lasting relationship between the three characters.
Hermione and Ron still don’t see eye to eye, with Hermione’s dutiful personality crashing with Ron’s insecurity and irresponsible nature. However, with Harry in the middle to balance his two best friends’ opposite personalities, the three manage to get along most of the time. Soon enough, the two put their differences aside to save the Philosopher’s Stone from the Dark Lord’s hands, with Ron playing an outstanding Chess game and Hermione getting Harry safely through Professor Snape’s trial.
Hermione and Ron Are Officially Friends in Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets
What started as a rocky relationship, soon becomes a close and loving friendship. After helping Harry save the world for the first time, it makes sense that the two share an unbreakable bond. Ron even becomes furious at Draco when the Slytherin calls Hermione a “mud-blood” and tries to defend her by casting a curse on Malfoy that unfortunately bounces on him. However, it shows how much Ron cares for Hermione in his second year at Hogwarts.
- Hermione’s biggest fear, as per her Boggart, is to be a failure.
- Ron’s biggest fear is spiders, especially Aragog.
During this year, Hermione has a schoolgirl crush on Gilderoy Lockhart, much like the rest of the female population at Hogwarts. This annoys both Ron and Harry, and some people have read it as jealousy when it comes to Ron. Either way, there’s no doubt that at this moment Ron and Hermione are very close, but there’s still a long way to go before actual romantic feelings show between these two.
In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Ron and Hermione Go through a Rocky Patch
When Hermione purchases a part Kneazle cat, named Crookshanks, before starting her third term, things become tense between her and Ron. Scabbers, who in the end turns out to be Peter Pettigrew in his animagus form, starts disappearing, which Ron attributes to Hermione’s cat. Ron was partly right, but for the wrong reasons. Ron and Hermione stopped talking for a while, and when Hermione told her teachers about Harry’s mysterious new broom, the two friends iced her completely, so it was a rough year for Hermione.
- Hermione’s Patronus is an Otter.
- Ron’s Patronus is a Jack Russel terrier.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban doesn’t showcase the best of Hermione and Ron’s relationship, but the movie starts hinting at a more than friendly relationship between the two. Hermione and Ron start to become tactile, with Hermione holding Ron’s arm at times, or hugging Ron when she thinks Buckbeak has been executed.
Hermione and Ron Start Having Feelings for Each Other
Ron Is Jealous of Viktor Krum in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is when things turn officially romantic between Hermione and Ron. Hermione spent most of her summer vacation at the Weasley’s home, and together with Ron and Harry, attended the Quidditch World Cup. However, during this year, Ron becomes petty and jealous, which, of course, doesn’t sit well with Hermione. She starts an organization for the well-being of elves, which Ron constantly mocks and underestimates. Additionally, Ron and Hermione have a big fight after she rejects Ron’s invitation to the ball as she has already accepted one from Viktor Krum. Still, she tells Ron she would have said yes to him if she hadn’t been his last option.
Things turn romantic between Krum and Hermione under Ron’s jealous eye, who even stops admiring his once favorite Quidditch player. It’s obvious that Ron has feelings for Hermione but is too proud to say anything about it. At the same time, it seems Hermione also cares for Ron romantically, but she’s understandably unwilling to be the bigger person. The two stay friends for the time being, but the romantic tension grows more and more from then on, leading them to have many fights throughout the next installments.
Hermione Keeps a Friendship With Viktor Krum & Ron Is Jealous in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
After two difficult years for Ron and Hermione, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix sees them finally achieve a semblance of balance. Ron still shows some signs of jealousy whenever he sees Hermione writing letters to Viktor Krum, but none of it develops into a bigger issue. The two are focused on helping Harry in such a difficult year, working hard on Dumbledore’s Army, and avoiding the wrath of Dolores Umbridge.
- Hermione’s wand is composed of vine and dragon heartstring and is 10 and 3-quarters of an inch long.
- Ron’s wand after his third Hogwarts year is made of willow and unicorn tail hair and is 14 inches.
The fifth year at Hogwarts might be the one in which Hermione and Ron truly deepen their relationship. Hermione spends almost the entire summer with Ron in Grimmauld Place without the presence of their third wheel (Harry). The two also bond over Harry’s moodiness and unpredictable behavior after Voldemort’s return. Likely, Ron and Hermione support each other throughout this year as Harry spends a lot of time alone or yelling at them. This book proves Ron and Hermione’s friendship goes beyond their relationship with Harry.
Hermione Is Jealous of Ron Dating Lavender Brown in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
If people hadn’t noticed Hermione and Ron’s romantic tension before Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, this is when they finally confirm these two have feelings for each other. Even Harry notices it, and he’s not exactly the most perceptive individual. One of the first hints is that Hermione is willing to break Hogwarts’ rules, using the Confundus Charm on Cormac McLaggen, to get Ron into the Gryffindor Quidditch Team, which says a lot.
After Ron learns that Hermione kissed Viktor Krum, he turns jealous and insecure, which motivates him to start dating Lavender Brown. He kisses the girl everywhere, to Hermione’s chagrin. Hermione ends up attacking Ron with a flock of birds and the two fight for a couple of months. However, Hermione and Ron reconcile when Ron almost dies of poisoning, and he calls her name while unconscious in the hospital wing. Once again, Ron’s insecurity becomes a big issue in his relationship with Hermione, but he manages to get over himself eventually.
Hermione and Ron Finally Confess Their Feelings for Each Other in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is an emotional roller coaster for all characters. The Golden Trio starts the search for the Horcrux, which proves to be a challenging task. Ron starts acting out when it is his turn to wear Slytherin’s Locket and becomes increasingly jealous of Harry and Hermione’s friendship. Ron, who had always coveted Harry’s fame and success, was afraid his best friend was also going to get the girl. However, Hermione is in love with Ron, especially after how heartbroken she was when Ron left the party.
- Hermione was Deputy Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and Senior Minister before becoming the Minister for Magic in 2019.
- Ron skipped his seventh year at Hogwarts to go straight to the Auror Academy.
When Ron comes back and saves Harry after the latter goes alone in a cold pond to retrieve Gryffindor’s Sword, Harry clarifies that he and Hermione are just friends, and everything goes back to normal. Well, Hermione spends a couple of months pretty mad at Ron, but that’s not out of the ordinary. Ron and Hermione spend most of the year working with Harry to find and destroy the rest of the Horcruxes and eventually make their way to Hogwarts. Finally, during the Battle of Hogwarts, Ron and Hermione kiss, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Ron and Hermione Build a Beautiful Family in the Harry Potter Epilogue
Eventually, when the world went back to normal, Ron and Hermione got married and had two children together: Rose and Hugo. In the Harry Potter epilogue, Rose starts her first year at Hogwarts alongside her cousin Albus Potter. Rose, much like her mother, is excited about starting her studies and seems as smart as Hermione. Their youngest son, Hugo, has a shy demeanor and is still not going to Hogwarts.
- Harry Potter and the Cursed Child states that Rose, much like her aunt, was a great Quidditch player and made the Gryffindor Quidditch Team as a Chaser.
- Hugo’s name starts with the letter ‘H’ like Hermione’s, while Rose’s name starts with the letter ‘R’ like Ron’s, which is a cute detail.
Ron and Hermione found the happiness they deserved after Harry defeated Lord Voldemort. Hermione had a successful career in the Ministry of Magic, eventually becoming the Minister for Magic. Ron, on the other hand, quit his job as an Auror and joined his brother George in the Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes’ story in Diagon Alley. The two have amazing jobs and a beautiful family, so it’s great to know all those fights during their Hogwarts year worked for the best.
