A new look at the making of Alien: Romulus has been revealed. It shows the Offspring seen in the film out of character and going their own way, which could be a bizarre sight for fans after seeing the film.
The footage was shared on social media by director Fede Alvarez. The director wrote in the caption of the post, “Robert Bobroczkyi's incredible talent prepares to chase [Cailee Spaeny] In Alien: Romulus.” It was also given a tag to Legacy Effects, the Emmy-winning special effects studio that worked on the film. In the comments, some fans expressed their surprise at how Offspring was created with practical effects, while others found it a bit funny to see the creature act so casual while conversing with a human on the film set. The video can be watched below.
“Offspring” is the name the creature was credited with in the film, although it is a human-xenomorph hybrid, giving it a unique look that pays homage to Prometheus. Bobroczkyi is a former Romanian basketball player, and his height obviously played a big role in getting the role. The former athlete, who made his acting debut with the role of Offspring in RomulusIt is 2.17 meters tall.
Alien: Romulus relied on practical effects rather than CGI
“For the creatures, we brought all the boys from Aliens,” Alvarez previously told THR of the efforts to bring the film series back to its roots with more practical effects. “They were in their early 20s when they made Aliensand were part of Stan Winston [special effects] team. And now we had them at the top of their game. They have their own shops, and so we got them all together to work on all the creatures, because we used all the animatronics and puppets on every level. I even got to be under the table with them, operating all these animatronics.”
He continued, “I have this obsession with no green screens, so we built every creature and every set. Everything had to be built so that we could really live and breathe in these spaces… When it comes to face-to-face encounters and moments with creatures, nothing beats the real thing.”
Alvarez co-wrote the screenplay for Alien: Romulus with Rodo Sayagues. The film stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu. Original Alien Director Ridley Scott served as a producer on the film, working with Alvarez on its production. Michael Pruss and Walter Hill also produced.
Alien: Romulus is currently showing in theaters.
