Today, Rockstar updated the PC version of Grand Theft Auto 5 and added the BattlEye anti-cheat, which reportedly could be the first step toward bringing the current console version of the game to PC.
This means we may finally get the ray tracing effects that Rockstar added to the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions. Rockstar used RT to enhance reflections in the game, so don't expect ray tracing GI, shadows, or ambient occlusion.
In addition to RT reflections, the PS5/Xbox Series X versions also featured career progression for GTA Online. The PC version never really got this feature, so now that the developers have added the BattleEye anti-cheat, we may see it on PC as well.
Since Rockstar hasn't confirmed anything, I recommend taking everything you read with a grain of salt. That said, I find it hilarious that Rockstar has been working on bringing the Expanded & Enhanced Edition of GTA 5 to PC for over half a year. This should have been an easy task.
It will also be interesting to see what will happen to all of GTA 5's mods. Will this latest update to GTA 5 affect compatibility? And what will happen when and if we get the Expanded & Enhanced Edition?
As I said before, Rockstar will not release GTA 6 on PC at the same time as the console versions. However, the fact that they included the BattlEye anti-cheat in GTA 5 means that the team is experimenting with it, so it's almost certain that GTA 6 on PC will also use BattlEye.
Stay tuned for more!
A leftover metadata file shows that Rockstar is working on a Gen9 version of #GTAV for the PC since the beginning of this year.
The addition of BattlEye could be seen as preparation for the release of the Gen9 version on PC.
