Rings of Power Season 2 Teases Balrog
When it comes to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of PowerOne thing fans are looking for are JRR Tolkien's iconic monsters. In season two, a few creatures have popped up, such as the monster that almost ate Sauron and the slime worm that tried to eat Arondir and Isildur.
As the series continues, Rings of Power Season two explores the troubles of the dwarven kingdom of Khazad-dûm. In the process, the show teases a signature monster down there. It heavily hints at what will ultimately lead to the end of life in what would be known as the Mines of Moria.
Rings of Power Season 2 Reveals Major Rift in Khazad-dûm
Durin IV sees the ring corrupting King Durin III
Rings of Power In the second season Durin III (the current king) is corrupted after obtaining a ring from Celebrimbor and Sauron disguised as Annatar. Durin III supplies the Forge of Eregion with mithril to strengthen the rings. In return, he gets seven rings in total. But he makes it clear to the other dwarf lords that they must pay him a fee to get theirs. He is arrogant and selfish, as he is selling what he thinks is a healing relic.
He extols its value, as his ring allows him to search the caves and find mithril. He even knows where to have his miners dig so they can restore sunlight after Mount Doom explodes. However, his son, Durin IV, can tell that something is wrong. His father hears voices and becomes obsessive. The Lord of the Rings Fans can draw a parallel to Smeagol and Frodo's behavior centuries later with the One Ring. It is not enlightening the king, but is guiding him toward some nefarious purpose.
Durin IV heads for Eregion and verbally slaughters Celebrimbor. Even before his father wore the ring, he was skeptical. Now, Durin IV is adamant that the rings created are imperfect and evil.. He returns home, making it clear that he will not be seduced. Durin III wants him back at his side, but Durin IV tries to stand firm. He foretells an impending civil war that Durin IV's wife, Disa, had been warned about after she claimed the rings. Ironically, after realizing the poison she had claimed, she makes a discovery that portends doom and gloom.
Rings of Power Season 2 Teases Balrog
Disa hears the roar of Tolkien's most iconic monster
Rings of Power In the first season Elrond spoke of the Balrog in mythology. He mentioned how he was banished in a previous war. Of course, The Lord of the Rings fans would have seen it in the mines when Gandalf fought him to protect Frodo's company. Now, viewers are seeing the origin of it. It comes when Disa tries to buy a decorative ball, only to have it fall into a crack and roll down into a hidden pocket.
Disa tries to use her stone song to find it. However, something resonates in response. As the waters ripple and the place shakes, it is clear that this is indeed the Balrog.. It is unclear whether he has just woken up or is screaming somewhere else while on another mission. But it is obvious that he will be making his way under this market soon enough. In Tolkien's lore, after the Dwarves used Sauron's “gift,” their mines were devastated.

The dwarves worked with the elves to dispel the threat of Sauron. But centuries later, the mithril diminished and they dug deeper, destabilizing the region. Once again it seemed the place was cursed. They became greedy, which is what the king is demonstrating at the moment. The show is twisting the lore, so it could very well bring back the story arc of the Balrog coming and ravaging the caves to claim them as its own..
He killed many dwarves and King Durin VI. Also known as Durin's Bane, this colossus transformed the place into the Black Pit, where orcs and goblins took refuge. Finally, the audience waited to see this monster in action. From the hornet's nest that the king overthrew, it seems that that timeline was accelerated after Disa's foray into the dark unknown.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is available to stream on Thursdays on Prime Video.
