Ray Fisher on Overcoming DC Controversy

Ray Fisher recently spoke about the challenges he faced following his public spat with DC Justice League director Joss Whedon and former DC Films president Walter Hamada. Fisher revealed that his latest film, The piano lessonhelped him find a way to move on.




Fisher spoke to Variety at the Toronto International Film Festival about his new role and how it helped him overcome his experiences with Joss Whedon in Justice League set. “What helped the whole process is that I have to surrender to [The Piano Lesson writer] August Wilson,” Fisher said. “For me it was a palate cleanser in a lot of ways because I've endured specific hardships in my life and some career hardships. Being able to come back to that space and say, “I don't want to be stuck in this. I don't want to be resentful about what happened. I want to move on, and that's what Lymon is all about.


Fisher went into more detail about the challenges his character Lymon faces in the film and how he was able to connect them to his own experiences. “The juxtaposition that existed within the piece, within the character. I think there's a little bit of Lymon Jackson in all of us. There's an innocence to him in this piece that a lot of people lose over time, especially when you go through that kind of hardship.”



Fisher Stars Alongside Samuel L. Jackson and More in Netflix's New Historical Drama

Fisher's new film, The piano lessonis based on August Wilson's 1987 Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name. The story is set in Pittsburgh in 1936 and follows the Charles family as they deal with family trauma and the ghosts of their ancestors while trying to decide what to do with a family piano. Boy Wilie (John David Washington) and sister Berniece (Danielle Deadwyler) clash over the piano and whether it should be kept in the family or sold, unleashing disturbing truths about the family's past and how their legacy is defined.

Samuel L. Jackson stars as Doaker in the film alongside John David Washington, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, Jerrika Hinton, Gail Bean, Danielle Deadwyler and Corey Hawkins. The film marks the directorial debut of Malcolm Washington and premiered at the 51st Telluride Film Festival on August 31.


The piano lesson It is scheduled for release in select theaters in the United States on November 8, before arriving on Netflix on November 22.
