Quentin Tarantino has long been rumored to have signed on to direct a The History of Star Trek film. The legendary director recently cleared the air about the project and debunked several inaccurate reports.
“It will never happen“, Tarantino said during an appearance on the Club Random with Bill Maher Podcast. “There has been so much misinformation about what it was going to be – nothing but misinformation. “I live in a special zone and part of my zone is that I’m not on Instagram and Facebook and I’m not creating this constant dialogue with the world about what’s going on in my life,” the director continued.
“So, if you're Joe Schlomoka and you're some kind of passing reporter, if you feel that Quentin is about to make a The History of Star Trek film or make a film called The Movie Critic, or whatever, it's kind of like that guy who wrote the Howard Hughes biography that ended up being a hoax,” Tarantino added. “The thing is, they can say anything.”
Tarantino then explained why he didn't silence the rumors sooner. My point is they write it in an entertainment magazine and then it gets picked up in 140 pieces because I won't close it because I'm not connected.” Despite the director blaming misinformation, screenwriter Mark L. Smith has previously stated that he has written a script for a Star Trek Movies based on a story by Tarantino.
There is a script for Tarantino's Star Trek movie
“Quentin and I were going back and forth,” Smith told Collider in December 2023. “He was going to do some stuff on it, and then he started worrying about the number, his kind of unofficial number of movies. I remember we were talking, and he says, “If only I could accept the idea that The History of Star Trek It could be my last film, the last thing I'll ever do. Is this how I want to end it?'”
“And I think that was the one thing that he never got over, so the script is still sitting on his desk,” Smith continued. “I know he said a lot of nice things about it. I would love for that to happen.. It's just one of those things I never see happening. But it would be the greatest Star Trek movie, not because of my script, but just because of what Tarantino would have wanted to do with it.. It was just an “ab***s-out” kind of thing.
Star Trek 4 series has also struggled to get off the ground with the project stuck in development hell for years. Chris Pine recently offered a solution to get the film off the ground during an appearance at ACE Superhero Comic Con 2024. “I think we should just make a much smaller movie, more story-driven and character-driven, and maybe do it that way,” he said. “Also, shoot it on film, not digital.”
