Pirates of the Caribbean franchise star ready to return despite character's death

Disney plans to continue the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, though details about upcoming projects are scarce. However, one original star has shared his willingness to return, as difficult as it may be.

Naomie Harris, who played Tia Dalma, has explained that she would love to return to the franchise. Tia Dalma had a major role in the second and third Pirates of the Caribbean film, and her character was later revealed to be Calypso, the goddess of the sea. However, Tia didn't have a happy ending, and speaking to ComicBook.com, Harris confirmed that the character is “very dead,” but confirmed that she would “definitely” be interested in returning to the franchise.

I disintegrated into a million crabs, so I think my character is definitely dead.,” Harris explained. “I loved Tia Dalma, she's one of my all-time favorite characters I've ever played. So I would definitely like to go back, but I think she's dead now.

So I would definitely love to come back, but I think she's definitely dead.

THE Pirates of the Caribbean had found ways to bring back characters before, so her apparent death in the third film couldn't mean anything. Harris didn't appear in either Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides OR Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Talesbut that doesn't stop her from showing interest in others Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

Is there a new movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga?

of Disney Pirates of the Caribbean grossed over $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office for its five films, a real success for the studio. The final film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No TalesReleased in 2017, it had the lowest ratings of the series but grossed nearly $800 million, proving that there was still interest in the franchise (via The Numbers).

Pirates of the Caribbean Producer Jerry Bruckheimer provided a recent update in late June 2024, revealing that the sixth film is currently in development. We are working on it“, Bruckheimer said.Jeff Nathanson is working on a script. We have another one… We have two.and we don't know who's going to win the horse race at this point. But hopefully next month I'll have a script, and maybe Disney will want to make it.”

There are also plans for a spin-off, with BarbieMargot Robbie is attached to the project. Announced in 2020, the film hasn’t premiered until now, but Bruckheimer confirmed that they’re still interested in a spinoff with Robbie as the lead. Since Naomie Harris’ Tia Dalma is “very dead” in the original franchise, perhaps she could return in the new spinoff, which doesn’t yet have a set timeline or plot.

The main issue surrounding the future of the franchise is Johnny Depp. After his legal battle with his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, and allegations of domestic violence, Disney has cut ties with the actor. So far, it is unclear whether Depp will reprise his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow, but given his strong attraction to the character, the franchise may not be as successful without his involvement in a new sequel.

Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, Peneloppe Cruz as Angelica Teach, Ian McShane as Edward Teach and Geoffrey Rush as Hector Barbossa all look very serious, at least according to the title Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
