The most popular subgenre of the horror genre is supernatural, but it has often been combined with other subgenres for a more recognizable and frightening experience. War horror films are not as abundant as supernatural horror, but they create a unique narrative experience that blends the terrifying aspects of the supernatural elements with the brutality of war and the fear and suspense that define the genre.
The acclaimed film Supreme Lord AND Headed to Paramount+ on September 1st. The film, one of the scariest horror films of all time, premiered in 2018 and was distributed by Paramount Pictures. With Julius Avery at the helm, the film's screenplay is by Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith, with an initial story by famed producer J.J. Abrams, who conceived the initial story. Supreme Lord with Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Mathilde Ollivier, John Magaro, Gianny Taufer, Pilou Asbæk, Bokeem Woodbine and Iain De Caestecker.
Set during World War II, the most explored historical period in film and television, the film follows a team of paratroopers on the eve of D-Day, sent to destroy a German radio jamming tower. Unfortunately, they don’t make it to their destination when their plane is shot down, forcing the soldiers to parachute to safety, but only a handful survive. The film follows Edward Boyce (Adepo) as he experiences his panic when he lands in a war zone with no idea what awaits him, before realizing that the war going on around him isn’t the most disturbing thing when his team discovers some mysterious experiments being conducted by the Nazis.
The film was a huge critical success, currently boasting a Certified Fresh rating of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes and 67% from the public. Unfortunately, the film did not replicate the same success at the box office. With a budget of 38 million dollars, the The film closed its run with $41.7 millionbarely covering the initial investment, despite most of the reviews being positive.
Overlord was initially believed to be part of the Cloverfield series
Supreme Lord is produced by JJ Abrams, who is the creator and producer of the Clover series. The science fiction anthology film series, which so far consists of three films, the 2008 Clover1 of 20160 Cloverfield Courseand 2018 The Cloverfield Paradoxare set in a fictional universe and concern supernatural elements and creatures attacking the Earth.
Initially it was assumed that 2018 Supreme Lord was connected to the Clover series, but JJ Abrams denied the connection at CinemaCon 2018, confirming that the horror of war is a standalone film. Clover the anthology usually shares themes and Easter eggs that end up tying the films together into a larger universe. Meanwhile, Supreme Lord is set during World War II and involves monstrous creatures resulting from Nazi experiments and has nothing to do with the extraterrestrial themes explored in Clover universe. There was an ongoing conversation about a fourth film in the franchise, but the untitled project was never Supreme Lord.
Supreme Lord will be available to stream on Paramount+ starting September 1st.
