Hulu subscribers' Halloween watchlists just got a major update. The 2022 horror film Barbarian will arrive on the streaming platform this October.
Starting October 1st, Barbarian will be available for streaming on Hulu. Directed by Zach Cregger, Barbarian focuses on a young woman, played by Georgina Campbell, who books a rental house in Detroit for a job interview. However, “when she arrives late one night, she discovers that the house is double booked and that a strange man is already there. Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the evening, but soon discovers that there is more to fear than an unexpected houseguest,” the official synopsis reads. The cast also includes Bill SkarsgĂ„rd and Justin Long, both no strangers to the horror genre.
Barbarian has been a huge commercial success for distributor 20th Century Studios, grossing over $45 million worldwide against a $4.5 million budget. With the horror film coming to Hulu in time for spooky season, the streamer is no doubt hoping that Barbarian will perform as well as Netflix did earlier this year. In May, Netflix revealed that Barbarian was one of the top 10 most-watched titles for the week of April 29, with 4.6 million viewers and 7.9 million hours watched.
What does the future hold for Barbarian director Zach Cregger?
Barbarian It was the solo directorial debut of Cregger, who had previously co-directed the comedies Miss March (2009) and The Civil War on Drugs (2011) with Trevor Moore. Cregger is ready to follow up Barbarian with another horror movie, Weapons. New Line Cinema beat out Universal, Netflix and Sony for the rights to Weaponswhich began production in May 2024. The cast of the upcoming film includes a cast of well-known actors, including Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich and Benedict Wong, among others.
While plot details remain largely under wraps, Weapons is confirmed to revolve around a small Florida community grappling with missing school children, police corruption, generational trauma, witchcraft, blood rituals and religious abuse. In May 2024, ahead of filming, Brolin praised Cregger's script for Weaponsstating, “I'm serious when I say that I think this is a really brilliant script design. Brilliant.”
Zach Cregger to Direct New Clue Movie
Beyond Weaponswhich won't hit theaters until 2026, Cregger hasn't announced what his next project will be. However, a recent report from trusted insider Jeff Sneider revealed that the filmmaker is in talks to helm Sony's upcoming reboot of Tracewhich will be written by Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4). Trace will be based on the best-selling whodunit board game of the same name, which was previously adapted to film in 1985 by director Jonathan Lynn. Neither Sony, which acquired the film and television rights to the Trace franchise under the TriStar Pictures label in April 2024, nor has Cregger commented on Sneider's report at this time.
Barbarian will arrive on Hulu on October 1st.
