A Knight's Tale director reveals why another streaming service passed on a potential

A Knight's Tale director Helgeland recently revealed that he had pitched ideas for a sequel that Sony Pictures, which owns the film rights, wanted to make with Netflix. The streamer ultimately decided not to move forward with the project. “When we finished A Knight's Talewe were already thinking about making the sequel as a pirate movie,” he said.

“(Actors Paul Bettany and Alan Tudyk) had the idea that William (Ledger's character) died in a war. However, William has a teenage daughter who wants to joust, but she's not allowed to because she's a woman. She tracks down the gang and they agree to teach her how to joust, but she has to hide who she is. They cut her hair short and she speaks in a deep voice, etc.,” Helgeland revealed.

Helgeland added: “I pitched it to Sony because they own the rights to it and it seemed like they were interested in making it with Netflix and releasing it as a Netflix movie. As I understand it, Netflix tested this sequel idea through their algorithms, which indicated that it wasn't going to be successful.”

The 2001 Heath Ledger film A Knight's Tale will arrive on Paramount+ on September 1, 2024.
