In July, No Man's Sky reached version 5.0 with the Worlds update, which revamped planetary generation to offer more variety, along with more detailed water, clouds, and weather. We didn't write about it at the time, because I guess rewriting the texture of the galaxy seemed like a small piece of timing.
Fishing is added in today's new update and I can't help but mention it.
Here's the trailer:
The update is called Aquarius, and it takes advantage of the Worlds update's flashy new oceans with pulsating, reflective surfaces that let you cast your line into them. According to the announcement, there's a wide variety of underwater life to be found, from “ordinary fish-like fish to giant alien cetaceans.” You'll need to find different bodies of water on different planets to collect them all.
To make matters easier, there's a new “Exo-Skiff” that's a customizable fishing platform that can be deployed and essentially hovers in the air. It has a built-in refrigerator to store your catch. Or you can set up your own automated fish farm that will collect fish and kill other types of flora or fauna for you while you're elsewhere. However you collect your fish, you can cook them up for dinner if you so choose.
I really like fishing in games, especially in games like Zelda or Kirby, where the fishing is a far cry from the much more dramatic adventure I'm supposed to be having. No Man's Sky's system also seems to have a lot of charming details, including the ability to catch “messages in bottles” left by other players. It's cute.
Aquarius is out now and free to all players, and No Man's Sky is currently 60% off on Steam as part of the Steam Space Exploration Fest.
