Naruto’s Most Famous Dialogues and Quotes

Naruto inspires fans in many ways. It’s always exciting watching a scrappy underdog hero like Naruto Uzumaki defeat powerful enemies to save the day, but a ninja like Naruto doesn’t let his actions do all the talking. He is an expressive person who has a lot to say, and while he may be a knucklehead some of the time, he’s wiser than he looks. Over time, his friends, and even his enemies, started listening to him and applying the lessons they learned from his words.

Across hundreds of episodes between Naruto, Naruto Shippuden and Boruto he has often spoken from experience. Once considered a lonely pariah with a monster inside him, he understood firsthand how it felt to be an outcast, but instead of allowing those feelings of rejection to drive him down a dark road, he turned those experiences to his favor. Having to fight his way up from the bottom taught him empathy, and through it all, he never lost hope. His promises of becoming the Hokage one day, coupled with his unshakable determination, hope, encouragement, support, and deep sincerity, make Naruto Uzumaki wise beyond measure, and that shows in some of his most inspiring quotes.

Updated on August 19, 2024, by Natasha Elder: Naruto Uzumaki is one of anime’s most iconic characters because of his distinct personality, which is defined, in part, by his words. Whether through his taunts, threats, promises or uplifting messages, Naruto has said a lot worth remembering. We have brought forward more of Naruto Uzumaki’s most famous dialogs, and added more images to better represent the momentous occasions where he spoke these words.

10 Most Iconic Quotes in Naruto, Ranked

The most iconic quotes from Naruto and how they make the series truly special within the shōnen genre. No other anime comes close to Naruto’s themes.

During Team Seven’s first real mission, Sasuke protects Naruto before mockingly asking if he’s hurt and calling him a scaredy-cat. Naruto had been fighting his hardest to prove he was an equal to Sasuke up until then, so these words cut deep, and during the Chunin Exams’ Forest of Death arc, Naruto gets a chance to throw them back at Sasuke.

Sasuke froze the first time he faced Orochimaru, who wanted to kidnap him, due to the villain’s overwhelming strength. Luckily for Sasuke, Naruto showed up in the nick of time to protect him from a brutal attack. After doing so, he called Sasuke a scaredy-cat and used his own taunting words against him in a memorable Naruto quote, showing his growth since the Land of Waves arc. Despite being a cool turnaround of Sasuke and Naruto’s dynamic, Naruto’s taunting doesn’t represent his overall character as well as some of his other quotes, making this Naruto Uzumaki dialog the last entry on this list.

19 “…And I Won’t Lose To Sasuke!”

Naruto, Land of Waves Arc, Episode 6, “A Dangerous Mission! Journey To The Land Of Waves!”

A young Naruto Uzumaki has a serious and determined expression in the Naruto anime.

I’m not going to need saving ever again. I’m not going to be afraid and try to run… and I won’t lose to Sasuke!

At the beginning of the Land of Waves arc, it is made clear that Naruto had always been seen as a failure and a monster by most of the Hidden Leaf village. As a result, he wanted to connect with Sasuke while simultaneously seeing him as a rival, but Naruto barely even registered on Sasuke’s radar until the moment that Naruto got poisoned.

Refusing to be a hindrance or to be the reason that the mission was halted, Naruto stabs his own hand with a kunai knife to stop the poison from spreading to the rest of his body. As he does, Naruto gives a speech where he vows never to need saving from anyone again, and that he refuses to lose to Sasuke. This is the first Naruto scene where Naruto genuinely seems cool, even to Sasuke, and this speech is one of Naruto’s most famous dialogues.

18 “It’s All Right To Cry When You’re Happy.”

Naruto, Land of Waves Arc, Episode 19: “The Demon In The Snow”

Naruto is crying after meeting his parents while standing in front of a yellow background in Naruto: Shippuden.

It’s all right to cry when you’re happy.

All too often, the idea that men shouldn’t be vulnerable or show their emotions is reinforced, especially not in front of others. These toxic stereotypes have plagued society for generations, so it’s refreshing to hear early-series Naruto telling an even younger Inari that it’s okay to express his emotions and cry in front of others. Perhaps because he spent so much time on his own, orphaned and shunned, he spent a lot of time working through negative emotions, even though he didn’t really have anyone to share them with until he started going to school.

While Naruto is specifically talking about expressing tears of joy in this particular quote, he’s not afraid to shed tears when he’s frustrated or sad, either. Naruto is a great shonen protagonist who teaches both other characters and viewers that expressing one’s feelings is far from weak. In fact, it might very well make one stronger. This is good for viewers to hear, considering how many heart-wrenching moments occur throughout the show.

17 “I Will Shoulder Your Hatred And Die With You!”

Naruto Shippuden, The Assembly of the Five Kage Arc, Episode 216, “High-Level Shinobi”

Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha charge at each other with a Rasengan and Chidori, respectively, during the five kage summit.

I will shoulder your hatred and die with you! Because I’m your friend!

After being given a Curse Mark from Orochimaru and realizing he’s slipping behind Naruto in progress, Sasuke Uchiha uses his hatred to defect from the Hidden Leaf village and shove away his closest bonds, including those of Naruto and Sakura. Despite this, Naruto never gives up on him, and during their final showdown near the end of Naruto Shippuden, Naruto tells Sasuke the reason he’s willing to shoulder his hatred is because they’re friends.

Realizing that not even giving into hatred could push Naruto away, Sasuke is finally broken out of his dark emotional turmoil in an incredibly emotional moment. Regardless of what his friends are struggling with, Naruto will face those struggles head-on alongside them. This Naruto quote is a great example of Naruto’s empathy, as well as an inspiring message for viewers to take to heart.

16 “I Don’t Quit, And I Won’t Run!”

Naruto, Chunin Exams Arc, Episode 25, “The Tenth Question! All Or Nothing”

Naruto looks nervous in front of a dark blue background in the original Naruto anime.

Never underestimate me! I don’t quit, and I won’t run!

Naruto made a declaration that he would never flee from danger or abandon his duty. While this is a fairly basic sentiment, it is also an important one that became one of the most recognizable Naruto quotes. At first, Naruto was mostly bark and little bite, and then the brutal reality of being a professional ninja hit him. He hesitated in the face of danger, then vowed to make that the last time when he realized the dangeorus consequences of his inaction.

Naruto sealed his resolve with this quote at the start of the Chunin Exams, and has since proven himself as a brave ninja who never hesitates in the face of danger. Many of his opponents, especially early in the show, underestimated him, and many of his enemies died regretting that oversight. Regardless of the villainy he faces, Naruto never backs down against any opponent, and fights to protect both his loved ones and his village.

15 “You’re Not A Demon Fox Anymore.”

Naruto Shippuden, Fourth Shinobi World War: Climax Arc, Episode 329, “Two-Man Team”

You’re not a demon fox anymore… you’re my partner.

For years, Naruto Uzumaki viewed Kurama for what he was – a tailed beast, a monster everyone feared and hated. Kurama was the reason everyone rejected Naruto as the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki, but over time, he learned to make the most of it because he didn’t have a choice. Kurama was a part of him, and once he learned to accept that, he befriended the Nine Tails in much the same way Killer Bee and Gyuki had become allies.

Naruto made big personal strides with Kurama once he acknowledged the latter was an asset to the Hidden Leaf Village and not just a creature. This ended up being very important later on, as it allowed Naruto to access more powerful Jinchuriki forms. Most important of all, Naruto called Kurama by name. It helped remind Naruto fans that yesterday’s enemy might be today’s friend, and that there’s always more than one way to view a person – a sweet sentiment and one of the sweetest Naruto Uzumaki quotes. Despite the heartwarming nature of this changing relationship, other Naruto Uzumaki quotes better express his desires, as well as his goals, which is why this quote sits at the number 15 spot.

14 “If I Become As Strong As You, Will I Become Like You?”

Naruto, Land of Waves Arc, Episode 19, “The Demon In The Snow”

Naruto Uzumaki is talking to a wounded Zabuza while Kakashi Hatake watches.

Do you really feel nothing? If I become as strong as you, will I become like you?

At the end of Naruto’s Land of Waves arc, Naruto asks Zabuza if he truly feels nothing at witnessing Haku give his life to protect Zabuza, given the struggles they had gone through together. Haku loved Zabuza more than anything, and fought for him despite hating fighting. Naruto was truly afraid at that moment that gaining power meant losing touch with oneself emotionally, not feeling anything for those who care about them most.

Right after this, though, Zabuza breaks down in tears and shares his true feelings about Haku. Zabuza saw him as much more than a human weapon, and, as a result, Naruto learned early on that the villains he faces are much more complex than they may seem at first glance. Thus, the fight against Zabuza and Haku doesn’t only serve to emphasize Team 7’s starting point before they grow, but it also teaches Naruto about the complicated motivations that might drive his opponents.

13 “…Not Having My Friends Here…Is the Most Painful Thing for Me!”

Naruto Shippuden, Fourth Shinobi World War: Climax, Epsiode 371, “Hole”

Naruto punches Obito in Naruto: Shippuden.

Quit it with your stupid reasoning. I meant to say that I’ll stand any pain for my friends! I’m not gonna give up on them! It might just be me being selfish, but… not having my friends here… is the most painful thing for me!

Naruto may not have had many friends at first, but one-by-one he accumulates more, eventually becoming part of quite the network. As someone that is loyal to those around him, it is no surprise that when his friends are threatened, he’ll step up and protect them. This Naruto dialogue succinctly summarizes one of his main motivations, as well as his determination to do whatever it takes to stand up for those that are close to him.

Naruto has built up the reputation of talking to his villains as much as he fights them, hence the term “talk-no-jutsu,” but that doesn’t mean that he won’t put himself on the line when it matters. Obito is revealed to be someone that was very similar to Naruto when he was a child, but that doesn’t stop the titular character from disregarding the Uchiha’s motivations. Whatever the reason, Naruto won’t excuse the fact that his friends are in danger.

12 “Shut Up About Destiny And How People Can’t Change!”

Naruto, Chunin Exams Arc, Episode 62, “A Failure’s True Power”

Naruto Uzumaki punches Neji Hyuga into the air with so much force that rocks fly around them in Naruto.

After all that talk about your destiny, you don’t really believe in it, do you? So shut up about destiny, and how people can’t change! ‘Cause unlike me, you’re not a failure.

Naruto sometimes faced opponents who thought the future was set in stone, such as Neji Hyuga in the Chunin Exam’s tournament arc, or Pain, who thought the cycle of hatred was the entire world’s inevitable destiny. As someone who fought through countless naysayers and obstacles to achieve his dreams, Naruto refuses to budge when faced with this ideology. In fact, he becomes understandably angry when he hears someone accept the claims others have made about them without a fight.

Naruto Uzumaki was confident that the future was never set for any person or the world, and whether he’s right or wrong, it’s more inspiring to think that people can take charge of their own fate and become anything they wish. That attitude can help an underdog like Naruto have the personal faith needed to prove all skeptics wrong.

11 “Even If I am Chopped to Pieces, I am Gonna Beat Orochimaru…”

Naruto Shippuden, Tenchi Bridge Reconaissance Mission Arc, Episode 48, “Bonds”

Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno and Yamato are looking at a tied-up Sai in Naruto: Shippuden.

If he rips my arms off, I’ll kick him to death. If he rips my legs off, I’ll bite him to death! If he rips my head off, I’ll stare him to death! And if he gouges out my eyes, I’ll curse him from beyond the grave. Even if I am chopped into pieces, I am gonna beat Orochimaru and take my friend Sasuke back once and for all…

Naruto’s determination to save Sasuke is both admirable and frustrating at different points in the series, depending on how the viewer looks at it. On one hand, it is worth admiring Naruto’s staunch devotion to his friend, but on the other, he also ignores the very real harm that Sasuke has inflicted on other members of Hidden Leaf village on his quest for revenge. Correctly, however, Naruto has identified Orochimaru as the real problem, given his role in manipulating Sasuke against his village.

The Hidden Leaf village’s relatively easy forgiveness of Orochimaru’s actions is one of Naruto’s most controversial plot points, and it is made even more so during moments such as this, when even Naruto is determined to kill Orochimaru at any cost. Naruto’s quote reminds viewers of how horrific Orochimaru’s actions have been, as well as the lengths that Naruto is willing to go to in order to save those that he cares about.

10 “If The World Ended, Who Would You Spend Your Last Day With?”

The Last: Naruto The Movie

Hinata… Do you remember that lesson in class? The one with, “If the end of the world came, who would you spend your last day with?” I couldn’t write anyone’s name down. I didn’t know my parents, and I didn’t have any friends… But now, I know exactly whom I’d choose. I want to be with you. Now and forever, until I die… I want to be with you, Hinata!

While talking with Hinata, Naruto asks if she remembers a question the two were asked back when they were students at the Academy. They were asked who they’d spend their last day with if the world was going to end, and without any family or friends to speak of, Naruto didn’t write anything down. Thankfully, this answer changes as he grows and forms connections with people – and in The Last: Naruto The Movie, he admits to Hinata that he wants to spend every day with her, proving how deep their relationship has grown, which is one of many reasons fans should watch this Naruto film.

This is an incredibly sweet answer, and shows how far Naruto has come since being someone isolated from others who didn’t have any close bonds. He cherishes the bond he has with Hinata and wants to share every waking moment with her. The sentiments that Naruto expresses in this quote show his growth not only as a character, but also in his relationship with Hinata. However, there are other quotes that better define his character’s motivations, so it remains at the midway point of this list.

9 “There Are No Shortcuts To Becoming Hokage.”

Naruto, Land of Waves Arc, Episode 2, “My Name Is Konohamaru!”

Konohamaru Sarutobi is angrily pointing at an angry Naruto Uzumaki in Naruto.

There are no shortcuts to becoming Hokage.

Naruto’s lifelong dream of becoming Hokage is one that he’s fought tirelessly for from the very beginning. He may not have understood all the responsibilities he’d be taking on until he actually became Hokage, but Naruto knew from the very start that there were no shortcuts to achieving such a coveted and highly-respected position. Despite his cavalier attitude most of the time, Naruto recognized that there were moments that required seriousness, as well.

The only way to become the Hokage, or achieve any dream, is to put one’s entire heart into it the way Naruto does. With this Naruto quote, Naruto inspires Konohamaru to take the path to achieving his dreams more seriously, while simultaneously inspiring the audience to give their all towards their own dreams, as well. It is only through dedicated efforts that anything worthwhile is achieved.

8 “If There’s Such A Thing As Peace, I Will Find It.”

Naruto Shippuden, The Two Saviors Arc, Episode 174, “Tale Of Naruto Uzumaki”

Naruto Uzumaki is hitting Pain in the stomach with the Rasengan in Naruto: Shippuden.

Then I will break that curse. If there’s such a thing as peace, I will find it. I won’t give up!

Throughout his life, Naruto has had every odd stacked against him and experienced crueler treatment from his fellow man than anyone should. Even so, Naruto never gives in to the curse of hatred and violence, always trying to talk his enemies out of their actions rather than violently stop them, unlike one of Naruto’s best villains, Pain. Wanting Pain to return to his non-violent roots, Naruto recites a quote from Nagato’s childhood that talks about finding peace, no matter how long it takes.

Using words that Nagato himself used to believe in, Naruto breaks through to Pain and restores his belief in the potential of a peaceful future that isn’t achieved through violence. Even if Naruto’s reciting words someone else wrote this appropriately conveys the fact that he wholeheartedly believes in peace despite all the violence he’s experienced throughout his life.

7 “…Only Then Can You Become Truly Strong.”

Naruto, Konoha Crush Arc, Episode 78, “Naruto’s Ninja Handbook”

Haku, from the anime Naruto, has his hair down and is looking at a bird on his shoulder.

Strength doesn’t come from fighting alone. Real strength is not what you have when fighting for only yourself… When you have something special you want to protect, only then can you become truly strong.

Naruto learns valuable lessons during the well-written Land of Waves arc, with the biggest being from Haku, someone with a good heart who’d been rescued and given purpose by Zabuzua, a villain, at a young age. Naruto doesn’t have a good answer when Haku asks what he’s trying to protect, and tells Naruto that it’s fighting for the sake of someone else that makes one truly strong. This is a lesson that Naruto takes to heart, as he repeats it to Gaara during their fight, who still believes that fighting only for oneself is the path to true strength

Both Gaara and Naruto had similar upbringings, as they were both ostracized for being Jinchuriki, not that Naruto knew that was the reason. As a result of such an upbringing, Gaara learned to depend only on himself, and understandablye believes fighting for oneself is the only way to become stronger. However, Naruto managed to not succumb to the same feelings. Instead, the belief that all Naruto’s friends have in him drives him forward as he strives to protect them at any cost.

6 “They’re The First To Accept Me As I Am. They’re My Friends.”

Naruto, Konoha Crush Arc, Episode 80, “The Third Hokage, Forever…!”

Naruto Uzumaki headbutts Gaara angrily in the anime Naruto.

They saved me from myself. They rescued me from my loneliness. They were the first to accept me as who I am. They’re my friends.

For much of his early life, Naruto suffered the pain of isolation, unable to form bonds with others. This changes over the course of his journey, to the point of his friends being a core source of strength for Naruto by the time the Konoha Crush arc rolls around. Facing Gaara, who believes inflicting pain on others is how to feel alive and that bonds are meaningless, Naruto’s ideology clashes against his both physically and metaphorically.

Gaara questions what friendship means and how friends could possibly be a source of strength for someone, and Naruto explains how his friends saved him from himself and his loneliness. Without the bonds he forged, Naruto would have ended up just like Gaara, and been powerless to help him. This is one of Naruto’s best and hardest-hitting dialogues, and is the impetus for Gaara undergoing a memorable redemption arc.

5 “I’m Glad I Ended Up Being Your Son!”

Naruto Shippuden, Power Arc, Episode 249, “Thank You”

I couldn’t understand what a parent’s love was like because you guys were never there… so I could only guess… But now I know… I live because you and Dad gave your lives for me and filled me up with love before the Nine-Tails was inside me! So here I am, happy and healthy! I’m glad I ended up being your son!

Naruto suffered many hardships after birth, losing both of his parents and being ostracized because of the dangerous Nine-Tailed Beast hosted inside of him. When he finally got a chance to meet his mother, Kushina, she apologized for how hard his upbringing was without and because of her and Minato’s decisions. Naruto wouldn’t hear any of this, instead thanking his mother for giving birth to him and insisting that all their love got through to him.

This Naruto quote is one of the series’ sweetest, as Naruto finally gets to meet his family, and Kushina gets closure knowing that her son views her as a phenomenal mother. Naruto understands the love they had for him instead of only being able to guess, and finally understands his true origins. The fact that this quote aptly describes the closure that Naruto feels is why it is at the number 5 spot.

4 “Changing the Things Before Us, Little by Little…Will Make the World a Better Place”

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Byakuya Gang Arc, Episode 46, “Go! The Crest of Night Strategy”

Boruto and Naruto Uzumaki are eating ramen together while sittign on a park bench in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.

Changing the things before us, little by little, even one thing at a time, will make the world a better place. I want Konohagakure to be a place where people smile and enjoy their lives. Will you lend me your strength? Let’s change Konohagakure together!

The Konoha 11 trained extensively in order to develop their impressive skillsets and protect the Hidden Village from outside threats. Naruto in particular worked hard towards his goal of protecting the village due to his dream of becoming Hokage. Despite the focus of the show on the ninja in the village, there are many other civilians that live there and require the protection of the strong shinobi. Once Naruto achieves his dream of becoming Hokage, however, he faces a different challenge.

Naruto Uzumaki, the Seventh Hokage, wants to change the village for the better, but knows that he can’t do it alone. This quote of his reminds the characters and fans alike that working as a community is the only way to build something that benefits everyone in a lasting manner. By asking for the strength of the people he is leading, Naruto is acknowledging the fact that no one stands alone. Rather, joint efforts are required in order to make the best version of a town as possible.

3 “Hard Work is Worthless for Those That Don’t Believe in Themselves.”

Naruto, Chunin Exams Arc, Episode 49, “Lee’s Hidden Strength: Forbidden Secret Jutsu!”

Neji Hyuga and Naruto Uzumaki are fighting against each other during the Chunin Exams in Naruto.

Hard work is worthless for those that don’t believe in themselves.

While Rock Lee is typically the character that fans think of when they think of those that have earned their success through hard work in Naruto, Naruto himself is no slouch. Despite initially being presented as an incorrigible prankster who messes around in school, Naruto is revealed to be someone willing to put in lots of hard work to hone his skills. Naruto only figured out how to use one of his most famous moves, the Rasengan, due to his intense training under Yamato and Kakashi.

Naruto says this memorable quote while watching Gaara and Rock Lee fight. Gaara’s impressive power is challenged by Lee’s equally impressive speed and strength, which he honed through hard work. While he didn’t win, he managed to land multiple hits on Gaara, which was thought virtually impossible due to the automatic sand defense. This quote also comes into play again when Naruto faces Neji, given Neji’s status as a prodigy and Naruto’s own reputation as a slower learner. Naruto’s dedication to training, even at this stage, allowed him to keep up with the other prodigious ninja.

2 “That’s My Nindo, My Ninja Way!”

Naruto, Chunin Exams, Episode 62, “A Failure’s True Power”

Naruto Uzumaki talking to a defeated Neji Hyuga during the Chunin Exams in Naruto.

I’m not gonna run away, I never go back on my word! That’s my Nindo, my Ninja Way!

Naruto’s tournament fight against Neji during the Chunin Exams arc led to one of the most inspirational Naruto quotes out there. Neji’s always looked down on Naruto like he’s a failure, and wholeheartedly believed that Naruto would never change his destiny. Naruto’s been hearing sentiments like this his whole life, and isn’t afraid to stand up to Neji with his own beliefs, that anyone can overcome their so-called destiny with grit and hard work.

Not only does this Naruto Uzumaki quote resonate with viewers, it resonates with Neji and causes huge growth for his character, as well. From birth, Neji had been told that he was destined to serve, and possibly die for, one of the members of the main Hyuga family. After hearing Naruto’s conviction, Neji stops believing that he’s forever weighed down by the destiny of being a Branch member of the Hyuga family, and starts living to define his own destiny.

1 “My Future Dream is to Become the Greatest Hokage!”

Naruto, Episode 4, “Pass or Fail: Survival Test”

…My future dream is to become the greatest Hokage! Then, the whole village will stop disrespecting me and start treating me like I’m somebody. Somebody important!

Naruto would not be himself if he did not have the lofty goal of becoming the Hokage. More than that, he wants to be the greatest Hokage of all time, surpassing even the Fourth Hokage, whom he idolized. From the very beginning, this Naruto quote made it clear that Naruto wasn’t satisfied with simply being a strong shinobi, but wanted to become the strongest of them all, thus obtaining the position of Hokage.

Additionally, Naruto’s reasoning for wanting to be Hokage is important. He doesn’t want this role because of a desire for power in-and-of itself. Rather, Naruto finally wants to be recognized by others. Growing up an ostracized orphan, the majority of the attention that Naruto received was negative. By becoming the leader of the Hidden Leaf, he would finally receive the positive attention that he had been missing his whole life. The fact that this Naruto dialog doesn’t only set up Naruto’s motivation, but also reveals such interesting detail of his character is why it is the best Naruto quote.
