Most Interesting Shangri-La Frontier Characters, Ranked

Shangri-La Frontier is an interesting, relatively recently released isekai. It is slowly becoming one of the best isekai of all time. Shangri-La is a fully immersive VR game. The game’s objective is to explore the world and defeat various monsters. The show has many amusing and compelling characters. Several interesting cast members, like Emul and Arthur Pencilgon, play a crucial role in the anime’s story.

Even the NPCs in Shangri-La feel alive and many are shrouded in mystery. The show has a way of letting every character shine. Almost every player in the game has an interesting design or quirk, NPC or otherwise. Characters like Aramyis and Psyger-0 keep fans of the series returning for more.

10 A Pro Gamer Controls Oikatzo

Kei Uomi Is a Very Talented Gamer

Kei Uomi, a professional gamer, controls Oikatzo. Kei knows Rakuro, the character Sunraku, from several other games they’ve played together. In SLF, Shangri-La Frontier, Oikatzo is a monk who relies on their fists to damage enemies. As the character Oikatzo, Rei can use many powerful techniques to add damage to his attacks. Oikatzo is extremely loyal to Pencilgon and typically does whatever she orders them to do. Due to their history in other games, Oikatzo has a strong relationship with Sunraku.

The pair are consistently bickering and arguing with one another. Their back-and-forth banter is one of the most entertaining parts of the series. As a professional gamer, Oikatzo is nearly at Sunraku’s level. The character is no joke and defeats the powerful enemy Kirin with Pencilgon’s help. Oikatzo eventually joins a guild with Pencilgon and Sunraku to continue the game’s story. Unfortunately, Oikatzo doesn’t stand out as much as the other characters, because they always follow someone else’s orders. Hopefully, they will begin to make their own decisions in the second season.

9 Emul Is a Powerful Magician

Emul Saves Sunraku Many Times

Sunraku standing with Emul on his back

Emul is a white Vorpal Bunny from Rabituza. Sunraku is brought to Rabituza by Emul. Although Emul appears to be a helpless rabbit, she is both a powerful magician and Vysache’s daughter. Her primary weapon is a magical book that she always carries with her. She accompanies Sunraku on much of his journey through Shangri-La, only leaving when she is in mortal danger. Emul’s magic combat abilities assist Sunraku and the party many times throughout the series. Emul even helps Sunraku defeat the Mud Digger, using her powerful magic. She can teleport herself and her friends, and conjure potent magic attacks.

Many isekai anime have worlds that are harsh and unforgiving, with these circumstances derived from the reincarnated forms of the worlds themselves.

Despite her meager appearance, Emul has been an asset to the party. She demonstrates many skills that allow Sunraku and the other players to defeat bosses gracefully. Emul’s skills as a magician make her a powerful opponent. However, she mostly provides support for the party. Hopefully, Emul will have a considerable power-up before the end of the series. Like many NPCs, her history is largely unknown. Emul’s full story will probably be explained along with Bilac and Vysache’s later in the series. She is often considered a fan-favorite mascot for her adorable appearance.

8 Aramyis Could Be the Series’ Most Powerful Swordsmen

Aramyis Is the Vice Captain of the Puss in Boots Musketeers

Aramyis Posing

Aramyis is a Cat Fairy from Cazzeria and possibly the strongest swordsman in the series. He is a small black cat with a bejeweled sword and a regal white musketeer’s uniform. Although Aramyis was only introduced recently, he has quickly become a fan favorite. However, some fans do find him slightly annoying. He is the second in command of the Cazzarian Mustekteers. As their vice-captain, Aramyis is at an extremely high level. He wields a powerful one-handed sword that he uses to unleash powerful beam attacks. Aramyis is utterly obsessed with Bilac and joins the party mostly to keep her safe.

Shangri-La Frontier Season 2, Episode 1 ‘Half-Naked Birdman and the Gang in Golem Paradise” Recap & Spoilers

Shangri-La Frontier has a beloved first season and continues to impress with its Season 2 debut.

When he first meets Sunraku, he slashes at him several times, to test his abilities. Fortunately, Sunraku satisfies him and he joins the party to assist Bilac. While the extent of his abilities has not been witnessed, he defeats enemies several times his size. Aramyis is a very useful anime sidekick. He will likely get more development as the series continues its second season. Aramyis will hopefully have more opportunities to prove why his sword skills are so influential.

7 Setsuna Is the Most Tragic Character in Shangri-La

Setsuna Helps Pencilgon Grow

Setsuna Smiling

Setsuna is a tragic character from Shangri-La Frontier’s Age of Divinity. Her past is intertwined with her former true love, Weathermon the Tombguard. Setsuna is the only ghost NPC in Shangri-La Frontier and cannot pass on while Weathermon still lives. She begs Arthur Pencilgon, and the rest of the party to defeat Weathermon and bring them peace. As a character from the Age of Divinity, many things about her character are shrouded in mystery. Setsuna is extremely vague about the events of her death.

The only thing she says concretely is that Weathermon blames himself and guards her grave forever because of it. Setsuna is one of the many characters that will likely be expanded upon as the series advances. Almost nothing is known about the Age of Divinity, which the second season focuses on. Many NPC characters, including Setsuna, are not given a fleshed-out backstory. The Age of Divinity will likely be explained in depth before the show ends.

6 Psyger-0 Is Slowly Getting More Confident

Rei Saiga Is More Than Her Crush

Psyger-0 in Shangri-La Frontier, fresh off a slice of their blade

Psyger-0 is one of the strongest characters in SLF and is also called the Attack Master. Psyger-0 is controlled by Rei Saiga, a member of Rakuro’s high school class. Not only is she at an extremely high level, but she is also a member of one of SLF’s elite guilds. However, Rei’s main goal is to play with Rakuro, her crush. Many of Psyger-0’s moments revolve around her debilitating affection for Sunraku, Rakuro’s character. Despite her ailments, Rei is still one of the strongest characters in the game. She even defeats Pencilgon, after Pencilgon wishes to stop being a player-killer.

Psyger-0 is a skilled combatant and could even give Aramiys a run for his money. Psyger-0 uses her sword skills, enhanced by powerful magic, to defeat her foes. There is no doubting why she is nicknamed the Attack Master. She consistently defeats many powerful enemies by herself. Aside from her fearsome combat abilities, Psyger-0 has some of the most comedic moments in the show. At this point, Sunraku almost completely ignores her. Maybe, Rei can fulfill her dreams and consistently play games with Rakuro by the end of the series.

5 Weathermon the Tombguard Is Nearly Unbeatable

Weathermon Is Setsuna’s True Love

Weathermon readies his weapon

Weathermon is one of the hardest bosses to defeat in Shangri-La. Weathermon wears futuristic samurai armor and wields a powerful two-handed sword. He is capable of many mighty attacks that would be fatal for normal players. As one of the Seven Colossi, no one has ever defeated him. Until Sunraku and the party fulfill Setsuna’s wish and attempt to put the pair to rest. Sunraku fights Weathermon, while the rest of the party fights the mighty robot, Kirin. The party still aids Sunraku several times throughout his fight with the monster. Weathermon has never been defeated for a reason. Even Sunraku struggles against this fearsome foe. Eventually, using all his skills, Sunraku defeats Weathermon with a lot of help from the party.

Isekai characters like Dr. Stone’s Senku Ishigami and SAO’s Kirito are extremely overpowered, making them fearsome forces in their new worlds.

Setsuna’s wish is fulfilled, and the party gains a variety of expensive loot. Despite his defeat, much about Weathermon is still shrouded in divinity. Yet, he is still one of the coolest unique enemies in the show. His fight with Sunraku and the party is the best battle in the entire series. It took everything in Sunraku and the party’s arsenal to defeat him. As one of the Colossi, Weathermon’s abilities are probably on par with Lycagon the Nightslayer, the series’ main antagonist.

4 Bilac Is a Blacksmith and a Warrior

Bilac Has Learned a Lot From Her Father

Bilac forging and talking to Sunraku

Bilac is a brown Vorpal Bunny from Rabituza. She is Emul’s and a powerful blacksmith. Aside from her normal tools, she normally wields a giant two-handed hammer. Bilac creates many powerful weapons that Sunraku uses throughout the series. Even though she is primarily a blacksmith, she is near level one hundred. After joining the party to become an Ancient Craftsman, Bilac proves she can handle her own. Bilac can also upgrade and repair weapons during battle. She also introduces the party to Aramyis. He is obsessed with Bilac, but she does not share his affection in any way.

Aramyis often gets beat up by Bilac in entertaining and comedic scenes. Bilac’s journey to become an Ancient Craftsman has become a staple in the series. Sunraku and the rest of the party need an Ancient Craftsman to access their exclusive loot from defeating Weathermon. Bilac has played a crucial part in making Sunraku as overpowered as he is. Without Bilac, Sunraku would never have made it this far in the story.

3 Arthur Pencilgon Truly Grows as a Person

Pencilgon Becomes Sunraku’s Greatest Ally

arthur-pencilgon-in-shangri-la-frontier

Arthur Pencilgon is one of the most interesting player characters from SLF. The model, Towa Amane, controls Arthur. Towa uses Pencilgon, and her other VR personas, to escape her real-life fans. Towa’s backstory is one of the many reasons that she identifies with Setsuna. Pencilgon and the rest of the party save her, but many of Pencilgon’s motivations remain unknown. Pencilgon is Sunraku’s greatest “frenemy”. The two constantly use each other to further their personal goals. Pencilgon begins the series as a player-killer but decides to change her ways before the conclusion of the first season.

Due to her extensive time in VR, Pencilgon is almost as skilled as Sunraku. She defeats the robot Kirin along with Oikatso’s help. Pencilgon is one of the few characters in Shangri-La who has gone through real character development. While many characters will likely grow throughout the series, Pencilgon’s decision to no longer be a player-killer shows the most growth thus far.

2 Sunraku Can Defeat Almost Any Foe

Sunraku Is the Protagonist of Shangri-La Frontier

Sunraku brandishes the Vorpal Choppers

The protagonist, Rakuro Hizutome, is the most interesting player character in SLF. Before getting into Shangri-La, Sunraku played mostly trash games. Because of this, he has developed a dangerous set of skills. Sunraku is capable of defeating almost any boss in any game. Towards the beginning of the series, Sunraku suffers a debilitating loss to Lycagon the Nightslayer. After losing the fight, Sunraku developed several scars and can only wear equipment on his head. He has the most backstory and development of any character throughout the series. The audience watches Sunraku as he battles many challenges and learns to defeat them through skill and practice. He is arrogant, but his arrogance is supported by talent and ability.

A good isekai protagonist isn’t necessarily that different from a great lead in other genres like high fantasy, science fiction, or romance.

Furthermore, Sunraku is always willing to admit when he is wrong. Throughout the series, Sunraku has triumphed and failed at many challenges. Despite his hangups, he continues to play SLF. Sunraku’s ultimate goal is to get revenge on Lycagon, one of the Seven Colossi. He will likely achieve his revenge at the very end of the series.

1 Don Vysache Is the Mysterious Rabbit Boss of Rabituza

Vysache Could Be One of the Strongest NPCs in the Series

Don Vysache is the leader of the mythical Rabituza. Vysache is the largest Vorpal Bunny in the series and wears traditional extravagant clothing. So far, Sunraku is the first character to journey to Rabituza and meet Vysache. Sunraku does this because he battled and lost to Lycagon. Vysache orders Emul to bring Sunraku to him, and the unique scenario begins. He is one of the most powerful NPCs and offers to train Sunraku. Vysache is also a Devine Craftsman, making him one of the most powerful mortal beings in isekai. He helps SUnraku prepare for his battle against Weathermon the Tombguard.

Ultimately, Sunraku won the fight largely due to the weapons created by Vysache. Don Vysache is one of the most mysterious and interesting characters in Shangri-La Frontier. He is brilliantly designed, and some of the coolest exposition moments in the series involve his character. While it is currently unknown what ties Vysache has to the Seven Colossi, this will likely be explored as the series continues. Either way, Vysache is the most interesting character in Shangri-La Frontier.
