Minecraft creators are already working on fixing the Minecraft movie

When Warner Bros. released a pretty awful trailer for The Minecraft Movie last week, there could only be one possible outcome: the game's legion of fan filmmakers, modders, texture pack creators, and casual gamers would try to outshine it. That process begins with the rapid release of several fan reworks of the trailer that use something like vanilla Minecraft graphics instead of the original, sinister combination of LB Photorealism and Jack Black. That's going to teach Johnny Hollywood how to get his grubby hands all over our beloved Creepers, right?

I've uncovered two of these reworks so far. Both look more appealing than the movie, in the same way that pulling a nail out of your leg is better than hammering one in. The one below comes from Alumio, a 3D artist, modeler, and animator best known for making Five Nights At Freddy's videos using Minecraft's blocky visuals.

And here's one from QdAndy, who warns, “I forced myself to do it as fast as I could and that's why some things look a little weird? Also, this is the best my potato computer can do without exploding.” Please note that watching these two videos will repeatedly expose you to the music from Magical Mystery Tour, a somewhat seedy late-career Beatles attempt. Yes, I'm fighting both Warner Bros and Beatles fans in this post. We love our Mondays spicy around here. Come to me, fans!

Meanwhile, Minecraft add-on creator Nogard has quickly released a Minecraft skin pack based on the film's cast, and the race is on to see which skin packer can best capture the dour, irresponsible curls of Jack Black's beard.

One thing that seems to gain some cautious enthusiasm in the trailer is the use of Ghasts as hot air balloons, but the film can't claim to have invented that idea. Those Ghasts in the trailer don't even have balls on them!

All this intrigue aside, I hope modders and texture and skin pack creators start applying more… obscure Minecraft aesthetics and traditions to what we see in the movie. Where are my glitchpack reinventions? Please, Minecrafters, save us from Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and their stuff. I keep coming across screenshots of different points in the Minecraft movie's sheep bleating animation, and it's like coming across footage of the five stages of grief.
