Mike Flanagan is best known for his work in the horror genre. The author has adapted several famous works, including Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House and Stephen King Doctor Sleepbut he also directed original films like the one in 2013 Eye and 2016 SilenceWith a new Stephen King adaptation on the way for Chuck's LifeThe director explains what he wants people to know before seeing the film.
Mike Flanagan appeared at FanExpo Canada and during the Echoes From Hill House: A Haunting Panel, he told ScreenRant's Joe Decklemeier what would have been different for Chuck's LifeThe director stressed that Chuck's Life it's not a horrorand referenced other Stephen King fan-favorites that fall outside of the regular genre, but his more dramatic works. He also noted that it is among his favorite projects, an exciting note given that most of his projects have been critically and commercially successful.
Flanagan clarified a very important detail about the upcoming film, letting audiences know that they will not be going on another disturbing journey. What can I tell you about it? Chuck's Life it's just not a horror story“, Flanagan warned. And this is the most important thing I want people to know before they start..”
It's based on a Stephen King story and it's me, so it's a very reasonable assumption that could be scary.
He recognized why people might think differently, knowing his film history. It's based on a Stephen King story and it's me, so it's a very reasonable assumption that could be scary. But it's not. It's the side of Stephen King that wrote Stand by Me AND The Wings of Freedom. That's that Steve, and it's a completely different world for me.” Tom Hiddleston also made the same observation a few months ago, comparing Chuck's Life TO The Wings of Freedom.
Flanagan also stressed one very important thing: it is his favorite film so far. It's my absolute favorite movie I've ever worked on. The cast is amazing, like you said, and I'm so proud of that.”
Flanagan continued: “Whatever happens, because he's a really strange, fragile little animal. I want you to have fun, but I think [you should] If you are expecting something scary, leave your expectations at the door because you will be sorely disappointed. But If you expect something that is a life-affirming celebration of joy, existence, and mortality, you will be very happy. We have to go home to Los Angeles in two weeks, and I don't know if we'll be unpacking because we have to go back right away. I'll still be in this [outfit] all the time.”
What is The Life of Chuck about?
Chuck's Life adapts the story of the same name from the 2020 collection If it bleeds. It follows Charles “Chuck” Krantz as he tells his story in reverse order, from his tragic death at age 39 to his childhood spent in a creepy house. Very few other details about the project have been revealed so far, as it only featured a promotional photo showing lead actor Tom Hiddleston as the title character in a corporate suit and glasses. Flanagan has yet to reveal a trailer for the film or an official release date.
Chuck's Life will star Hiddleston in his first project with the director. However, there will also be no fewer than 15 returning actors. Kate Siegel, Heather Langenkamp, Samantha Sloyan, Carl Lumbly, Rahul Kohli, Matt Biedel, Sauriyan Sapkota, Michael Trucco, Molly C. Quinn, Annalise Basso, Violet McGraw, Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Karen Gillan, Jacob Tremblay, and Mark Hamill will all reunite with Flanagan after working together on other projects. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mia Sara, Benjamin Pajak, Taylor Gordon, Matthew Lillard, Antonio Raul Corbo, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, and David Dastmalchian will also be making their Flanaverse debuts alongside Hiddleston.
Chuck's Life will premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from September 5 to 15. It is not yet clear when the film will be released in theaters.
