Marvel Reveals One X-Force Member Who Wasn't Supposed to Be on the Team

The following contains major spoilers for Force X #3, on sale September 25 at Marvel Comics.

The leader of X-Force has finally admitted that a key member of the team should never have been part of their roster.

Force X #3 sees the eponymous team of mutant heroes racing to Cambodia, where an unknown catastrophe has struck the country. While they are still unsure of what lies ahead, Forge has no doubt that his team is ready for the challenges that lie ahead. Sage, on the other hand, isn't so sure, especially when their youngest member, Surge, received his invitation after the original lineup had already been established.

Noriko Ashida, better known as Surge, made her Marvel Comics debut in the pages of 2004 New Mutants #8 by writers Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir and artists Carlo Barberi and Khary Randolph. When her mutant powers manifested shortly after she turned thirteen, Noriko ran away from home, having previously stated that her father “didn't believe in mutants.” Noriko eventually made her way to the Xavier Institute to seek help, only to be turned away at the gate by young mutant and future villain Julian Keller, then known as Hellion. Fortunately, Noriko would eventually find her place as one of Xavier's students, kicking off a long and storied career as Surge.

After the tragic end of the Krakoan era, Noriko returned to Japan where she was reunited with many of her closest family. Not long after, Forge's X-Force arrived to quell the threat of the oozing monstrosity known as Taboo. Initially, Noriko took the arrival of X-Force as yet another assault, though once she realized what they were really up to, she quickly joined them in their fight against the towering, sludge-like alien beast. Unlike the other members, Noriko found a place for herself in X-Force rather than being explicitly invited to join like the rest of Forge's hand-picked roster of mutant heroes.

Aside from Forge, Sage, and Surge, the current X-Force roster consists of Betsy Braddock, aka Captain Britain, Rachel Summers, aka Askani, and the enigmatic Tank, who has thus far never removed his crimson armor. Using Forge's latest invention, the Analog, the heroes of X-Force pinpoint what would be catastrophic events, giving the team a chance to intervene before it's too late or, if possible, before things go south in the first place. Unfortunately, the Analog provides little to no detail regarding any threats, which has led the heroes of X-Force to be at odds with Wakanda.

Force X Issue #3 will be on sale September 25th from Marvel Comics.
