Longtime Marvel Executive Announces Exit From Company After Recent Emmy Award

Dave Bushore, longtime Marvel executive and director of the recent What if? – An Immersive Storyhe leaves the company at the peak of his career.

Bushore has been with Marvel Studios for 15 years, most recently as VP, franchise creative & immersive development for the company. He worked on the beloved What if? series that explores alternative possibilities for the MCU like “what if the Avengers became zombies?” He was the director and executive producer of What if? – An Immersive Storywhich is a collaboration between Marvel and ILM for Apple Vision Pro. The VR experience was awarded a Creative Arts Emmy in the category of Outstanding Innovation in Emerging Media Programming, as well as being presented at the Venice International Film Festival, a first for Marvel, in the immersive section “Best of Experiences”, becoming one of only ten immersive projects selected from around the world.

Bushore began his career at Marvel soon after the release of The Incredible Hulk in 2009. He worked as a coordinator for Brad Winderbaum, who is currently the head of television, streaming and animation. He has always been a comic book lover at heart, recalling how he had to explain to his friends who Nick Fury was when they went to see the first two Iron Man movies in theaters. His career has grown alongside the powerhouse that is Marvel, working in home entertainment, TV specials, park development, and the franchise team, which handles projects outside of Marvel’s theatrical releases.

What if it was immersive?

It's clear that Bushore's career was taking off at Marvel. He told The Hollywood Reporter, “Being invited to Venice was incredible […] Being there and seeing the reception of this new type of content, and the people who have come through this experience, the filmmakers and ambassadors, has been a really cool thing.” So why is he leaving Marvel? It would seem his motive is to pursue more of the high-level exploration of the intersection of technology and storytelling. He's not joining a new company, but instead taking a leap of faith into the unknown.

Bushore Will Lose Marvel, But He's Excited About the Future

He learned a lot from Marvel about storytelling and world-building, lessons he’ll carry with him into new projects.I will miss the people, characters and ideas that circulate in the corridors“, Bushore said. “There's no better place for that than Marvel Studios, it's infectious.” It's clear he loves his old job very much, but he's ready to take what he's learned elsewhere.”I'm ready to bring that energy and those big ideas to some new types of stories in town.“, he said.

There’s no better place for this than Marvel Studios: it’s contagious.

Marvel is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with when it comes to storytelling. The studio’s impact on the world-building landscape of cinema continues to be felt as other studios continue to try to replicate its success. However, the world of storytelling is much larger than what can be contained within the confines of Marvel Comics, and it’s exciting to see someone with so much experience in this new form of world-building on film and beyond take what they’ve learned outside of Marvel Studios.
