Two action-adventure video game franchises are getting live-action adaptations in the future. According to THR, the trend of video game adaptations continues, as a partnership between Remedy Entertainment and Annapurna Pictures is set to produce live-action TV shows and films for both Alan Wake AND Check franchising.
Hector Sanchez, president of new media and interactivity at Los Angeles-based Annapurna Entertainment, spoke about the collaboration agreement, saying, “This deal with Remedy is not just about adapting great games, but also opening new avenues in the way companies can collaborate. By supporting Remedy's move to self-publishing, we're putting our faith in their vision.” Annapurna founder Megan Ellison also spoke about the broad scope of the deal and the different forms of content it will produce, saying, “Today, people fall in love with characters and universes, not formats, and We're excited to leverage Remedy's beloved and engaging storytelling in these new media.”
Annapurna, an independent media company founded in 2011, has produced a number of critically acclaimed films, including Oscar winners such as His, Zero Dark ThirtyAND ViceThey also created the 2023 animated film Nimona, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. The company also has a video game division that has released games such as What Remains of Edith AND Stray.
Two acclaimed studios collaborate
Finnish game developer Remedy has created titles such as Alan Wake AND Max Payne. Alan Wake tells the story of a writer who tries to solve the mystery of his wife's disappearance, as the events of his latest novel begin to unfold in his real life. Check follows the actions of a fictional government agency known as the Federal Bureau of Control as they use supernatural powers to contain and study phenomena that shatter our current reality. Remedy Released Alan Wake 2 in October last year, selling more than 1.3 million copies by February this year, making it Remedy Entertainment's best-selling game.Control 2co-produced and co-financed with Annapurna, it was announced by Remedy in 2022 without a definitive release date yet.
It is not yet clear when both Alan Wake OR Check adaptations will be published.
