A new one Matlock series is coming to CBS this fall. The reboot's new trailer previews Kathy Bates taking on the name with her reimagined version of the iconic TV character.
Previously, Andy Griffith starred in the original version of Matlockspending nearly a decade in the role. CBS will reimagine the show with a new incarnation starring Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock. CBS teases audiences with this version “This is not the Matlock you expect,” although it is no less brilliant than its predecessor, and uses its wits to win cases in court in the same way. The trailer can be watched below.
Official CBS description Matlock reboot reads: “After achieving success in her younger years, brilliant septuagenarian Madeline Matlock, played by Academy Award and Emmy Award winner Kathy Bates, re-enters the workforce at a prestigious law firm where she uses her modest demeanor and shrewd tactics to win cases and expose internal corruption. Inspired by the classic television series of the same name.”
Matlock Reimagined With Kathy Bates as the Lead
Other series stars include Skye P. Marshall, Jason Ritter, David Del Rio and Leah Lewis. Jennie Snyder Urman developed the show for CBS. Bate and Urman serve as executive producers along with Joanna Klein, Eric Christian Olsen, John Will and Kat Coiro.
“I can’t give everything away, but she has a mission,” Bates said of Matty’s motivation in the new series, according to TV Insider. “The law firm isn’t allowed to discriminate based on her age. She uses that to get in the front door and seemingly create a whole new life for herself. She also hides things from her husband every now and then. Ultimately, just when you think Matlock has only fooled the people in her life, you realize she’s fooled the public, too.”
Of playing such a big role at the age of 75, she added: “To have this at the end of my career is an incredible gift. I never dreamed I would have a third act like this. I never thought at my age that I would play such a wonderful role and for the network, that so many people will see. She uses her life experience and wisdom to really connect with people, instead of Googling everything, and that helps her solve cases. She doesn't live her life through a screen. She lives it looking into people's eyes and having real relationships.”
Fans will get a sneak peek at what the new series will look like later this month. A sneak peek at the new Matlock will debut Sunday, September 2 on CBS. The series will then officially debut on October 17.
