How I Met Your Father continued the story of how I Met Your Motheralthough the spin-off series wasn't meant to last that long. Although the original show ran for 11 seasons, Hulu ended up canceling it How I Met Your Father after only two.
While How I Met Your Father was in the middle of its two-season run, original series star Alyson Hannigan wasn't watching. According to People, Hannigan recently shared her thoughts on How I Met Your Fatheradmitting that she didn't have the energy to actually watch the show. As Hannigan explained, this was due to her having a sentimental attachment to the original series, making it emotionally difficult to see the “same set” being used by a new cast of characters.
“My heart hurt a little,” Hannigan said, referring to when she first saw the footage from the set. “And I thought, 'I don't think I'm ready to watch.'”
It made my heart hurt a little.
Hannigan stressed that her real husband and how I Met Your Mother co-star Alexis Denisof also appeared in How I Met Your Father to reprise her role as TV host Sandy Rivers. In addition to this connection, the spin-off featured other familiar faces such as Neil Patrick Harris (Barney Stinson), Laura Bell Bundy (Becky), Kyle MacLachlan (The Captain), Cobie Smulders (Robin Scherbatsky) and Joe Nieves (Carl the Bartender). Series director Pamela Fryman returned to direct several episodes of How I Met Your Father.
“I probably should have watched that episode. [my husband was in]”, Hannigan noted. “So I should have [watched]But I didn't succeed. It just made me sad because I thought, oh, it's the same set..”
Hinting at why she felt so excited about the new series, Hannigan also recalled wrapping up the original series a decade ago, saying, “I just remember being quite emotional throughout all of this because there have been so many “lasts.” We've all taken the year to really appreciate all the moments that we've had so many, in the many seasons that we've done so.”
The spin-off series kept the concept by reversing the genders
Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger created the spin-off, which is a continuation of the original series created by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. How I Met Your Father featured Kim Cattrall and Hilary Duff sharing the role of Sophie, with the former serving as the narrator and future version of the character — similar to how Bob Saget and Josh Radnor shared the role of Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Mother. The spin-off tells the story of Sophie who meets the man who will become the father of her future child, reversing the concept of the original series which did the same thing, but with the mother.
