How to solve moth paintings in hogwarts legacy

The Hogwarts Legacy player uses Lumos to reveal a painting.

  • Lumos is the first spell players learn in The Hogwarts Legacy. Professor Fig teaches them this during the quest “The Path to Hogwarts” before the game officially begins.

The paintings of moths in The Hogwarts Legacy are easier to solve than to find. Players will find these paintings during their adventures in several new and hidden locations throughout Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. The easiest way to find moth-framed paintings is to cast the Revelio spell, which highlights any puzzle or interactive element in the game with a blue glow. The paintings are recognizable by their distinctive oval shape and the moth-shaped indentation at the bottom of the frame. Once players come across one, Lumos is the key spell to solving the moth painting puzzleCasting Lumos will reveal an image with the location of the moth that belongs to the painting.

Typically, the location is close to the painting, but some moths are further away than others, meaning players will have to do a bit of exploring. Revelio also works to find moths, but since they are small objects, players need to be fairly close to them for the spell to be useful. They are also not very noticeable, so players must also pay close attention to their surroundings. Once players find the moth, they simply cast the Lumos spell again. The moth will follow the player from then on as long as they keep the spell activated. When players reach the empty painting with the moth, they simply need to deactivate Lumos or use a basic attack. The moth will fly directly into the painting. The puzzle will disappear permanently and players will get a Field Guide page.

  • To learn Level 1 Alohomora, players will need to speak to Gladwin Moon to start the quest “The Keepers' Moon Lament” and retrieve the Demiguise statues.
  • To learn the Depulso spell, players must complete the quest “The Jackdaw's Rest”, after which they will complete Professor Sharp's first assignment, which will teach them the Depulso spell.
