Hacks creators respond to surprising Emmy win for The Bear

Tricks was awarded a coveted win at the Primetime Emmy Awards. In the final Emmys of the evening on Sunday night, Tricks won for Outstanding Comedy Seriesresulting a bit surprising.

While The bear Not a full-blown comedy, the show was seen as a strong contender for Outstanding Comedy Series. It had already scored several big wins earlier in the night, including acting Emmys for Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colón-Zayas. The bear had won the same award the previous year and many predicted that he would win again in 2024.

Instead, Tricks was ultimately named the winner at the end of the night by entertainment icon Catherine O'Hara. In his acceptance speech, co-creator Paul W. Downs extolled the importance of the win for programs with older leads.

“When we pitched this show about two women, one of whom was over 60, we didn't know if it was going to sell, and we have to thank everyone who helped make this show happen,” Downs explained. “About 20 percent of our population is over 60, and only three percent of those characters on television are 60, and I'd love to see more of that because, even though I'm a great young supporting character, I'd love to be a great old leading man.”

Series co-creator Lucia Aniello added: “Comedy is very important to us, but we think laughing at someone can bridge divides, so please support local comedy and comedians.”
