There are rumors of a The Goonies sequels in the works have been denied by one of the film's stars, but fans may not want to give up hope for a second film just yet. One of the film's original stars has continued her campaign to make The Goonies 2 it will happen, despite recent rumors being denied.
Rumours have emerged from a report published by The Sun that The Goonies 2 was entering the early stages of development with several original stars set to return. Martha Plimpton (Stef) shut down this report after it went viral, telling fans on social media that “there is no The Goonies 2 script,” definitively adding that “it’s not real.” However, Plimpton’s co-star Sean Astin (Mikey) shared a message of his own about X that was much more upbeat.
While not directly addressing the rumor, Astin did share a fan-made poster for a fictional sequel titled The Goonies are pretty good. The poster also notes that it is a “Steven Spielberg film,” highlighting the legendary director's potential involvement. Astin was excited enough by the idea to jot down in a message next to the poster, “It's our moment. Come on Steven…”
It's our time. Come on Steven…
Astin spent many years talking about his desire to see The Goonies get a sequel. He said in a 2014 interview that director Richard Donner wanted to make the film, adding that if the celebrated director “says it's happening, it has to be.” Astin later teased in 2016 that Mikey would come “face to face with One-Eyed Willy” in a sequel. Donner passed away in 2021 at the age of 91, though the sequel could still potentially move forward with another director at the helm, similar to how Lethal Weapon 5 is in the works and will be directed by Mel Gibson.
One of the other stars of The Goonies is Ke Huy Quan, who won his first Academy Award after his return to acting for his role in Everything, everywhere, all at onceLast year, Quan talked about the potential of The Goonies getting a sequel, explaining that the biggest problem was that there were problems crafting a satisfying script. While Donner's death casts further doubt on the sequel's realization, Quan remains open to the idea of revisiting his role as Data.
Ke Huy Quan is still open to returning as Data
“You know, honestly, for the last 30-odd years, we've been trying to make a The Goonies 2“, he told Variety. “In fact, when I was much younger, I wanted it to happen because it was the film that I thought I needed to relaunch my career. Honestly, we had numerous scripts, but there wasn't one that seemed to live up to the original. Unfortunately, we lost the captain of our ship, Dick Donner, who I love deeply. I really don't know if there will be a The Goonies 2. But I would be open to revisiting that character.”
