If you think George R.R. Martin's fantasy skills end with dragons and magic, you couldn't be more wrong. His supernatural repertoire also extends to vampires, and he has a book called Fevre's Dream; furthermore, he knows exactly who would be best suited to interpret and lead the adaptation.
Winter is Coming had the pleasure of George R.R. Martin at the World Science Fiction Convention, where they discussed the possibility of future book-to-screen adaptations of his work. Martin revealed that he would be very excited to convert his novel Fevre's dream. “Fevre's Dream,” he replied without hesitation. “I love Fevre's Dreamand I have had numerous meetings. I wrote a screenplay for Fevre's Dreamat some point we developed it. They didn't do the script, obviously, but the rights reverted to me, so I own it.”
He then went on to reveal who would be the perfect candidate to tackle such a project: “I had meetings with Guillermo del Toro From Fevre's Dream. He likes it, he says he wants to do it… but he doesn't want to do it now. He always has this project first and that project first, and then this other project. But he'll do it eventually. Fevre's Dreamif he lives that long and I live that long and movies live that long, I don't know… I think Fevre's Dream that would be awesome.”
George RR Martin: “We want Ron Perlman to be the lead!”
Martin continued with his ideas: “We want Ron Perlman to be the protagonist“We even cast him!” he said. “My friend Ron Perlman for Abner Marsh. Ron wants to do it. Everybody wants to do it, all we need is $100 million.” It wouldn't be the first time they'd worked together: Martin worked as a co-producer and supervising writer for a CBS Beauty and the Beast series, a project in which Perlman starred; “And of course Ron Perlman. Working with Ron Perlman has been one of the great pleasures of my life.. It was just a pleasure writing for him.” They're not the only ones to have collaborated: Del Toro and Perlman teamed up for the Hellboy franchising in 2004.
Fevre's Dream is best described by the website as: “A vampire novel set along the Mississippi River in the mid-1800s that plays deeply to Martin's strengths as a horror writer. The story follows a grizzled, down-on-his-luck steamboat captain named Abner Marsh, who is hired by a mysterious man named Joshua York to ferry him up and down the river so he can carry out a secret agenda,” and “a larger world of vampire politics, full of twists and turns that would make any A Song of Ice and Fire reader feels at home.”
The successes of game of Thrones AND House of the Dragon are very eloquent and Del Toro, along with Perlman, are no strangers to fantasy: this could be the dream team for Martin's next adaptation.
