Former Ubisoft and Eidos-Montréal developer Stevan Anastasoff has announced Tales from the Mabinogion, a third-person narrative game written primarily in Welsh and based on ancient Welsh folklore. The game puts you in charge of a wandering ruler on a quest to save the land from a terrible fog. You can catch a trailer below. Yes, there are English subtitles.

“When a vengeful wizard unleashes a cursed mist on the ancient Welsh Kingdom of Dyfed, a warrior king finds himself teeming with monsters from the legendary Otherworld of Annwn,” the Steam page explains. “To save his state, he embarks on a quest to uncover the origins of the curse and uncover the secrets needed to prevent its devastating impact.”
Tales from the Mabinogion sees you tracking monster tracks and grappling with mystical beasts across a landscape full of pale organic pigments and thick brushstrokes inspired by Erin Hanson, Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet (another parallel, if not an influence, is Aardman's Tale of World War 11-11: Memories Retold, whose art style is a commentary on the fallibility of memory). It's not clear if there's any kind of combat system, but there's definitely confrontation and conflict.
The Mabinogion of the title is a collection of ancient Welsh stories dating back to the 12th century. As you progress through the game, you'll uncover a few of these fragmented tales. “Welsh is a beautiful, ancient, musical, magical language – the language that inspired Tolkien's Sildarin, the language of the Elves,” Anastasoff comments in an announcement. “There's no more fitting way to tell a fantasy story!”
Anastasoff's collaborators include the renowned Warhammer author Gav Thorpe, who wrote The Lion. The game's Welsh script is the work of translator Rhys Iorwerth and voiced by Phil Rowe, whose other credits include Age Of Empires and Raid: Shadow Legends. The music is provided by Welsh folk musician Oliver Wilson-Dickson.
The game is expected to be released on PC via Steam in 2025.
