Five Nights at Freddy's The box office success has hinted at more installments and a budding film franchise. Hopes for a film series were raised when a sequel was given the green light, sparking speculation about which storylines will now be adapted.
Collider has confirmed that production for Five Nights at Freddy's 2 Want start end of October 2024. The update follows a series of teasers that game creator Scott Cawthon has been posting on social media; he recently shared a photo of the sequel’s script and teasers of the animatronics. The first film barely explored the massive lore behind the game franchise, which has released ten mainline titles to date. Five Nights at Freddy's The finale revealed that William Afton (played by Mathew Lillard) arranged for Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson) to take over Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Afton, a well-known villain in the games, will likely appear in the sequel after Willard teased his eagerness to reprise the role.
A recent casting update also suggests that a key protagonist is joining the group. According to insider Daniel Richtman (via ComicBook), “They're looking for a new major male character for Five Nights at Freddy's 2,” he said. “I guess that's Henry Emily.” The character co-owns Freddy Fazbear's with Afton; Emily handled the company's finances and developed the animatronics' spring locks. The sequel could stray far from the source material if Emily's casting is confirmed, or the writers could come up with alternative solutions to its plot; Emily's daughter Charlotte is Afton's first victim, whose ghost possessed The Puppet that debuted in FNAF2 video game. Fans claimed that The Puppet was a barely visible Easter egg in the FNAF film; the credits also teased that the character could appear in the sequel.
The FNAF movie adapted the first three games in the series
In a previous interview, Lillard said that the first film drew elements from the first three games in the series. The sequel film is expected to take the same creative liberties with the source material, introducing storylines and characters from different points in the timeline. Knowing that William Afton is a recurring villain in the games, Willard hoped he would return in future films. “I would obviously love to continue [even now that] “He's trapped in a spring, but I hope to find more elements in the movies,” he told Screen Rant before the sequel was announced. “I hope they make more movies. You would assume they would, but I hope to find more opportunities to get him out of the spring-trap costume. But we'll see. We'll see.”
The final scene of Five Nights at Freddy's saw a possessed animatronic watching a dying Afton on the back of Freddy Fazbear. The film doesn’t confirm his death, but even if it did, he lived on as a tormenting ghost in the video games. Lillard’s character could return if the sequel stays true to the lore. “…We’re driven by the need to deliver on behalf of a fan base that’s as passionate as any other fan base out there,” he added. “So it was important to me to represent the game and the lore and the universe that everyone cares about so deeply as best as I could. And that’s really all that mattered, to be honest.”
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 The release date is scheduled for December 5, 2025.
