JK Simmons remains the definitive J. Jonah Jameson, but even he was surprised by the way Marvel reintroduced his character in Spiderman franchising.
In an interview with GQ, Simmons looked back at some of his most beloved performances in film and television, including the bombastic, Spider-Man-hating Daily Bugle owner in both the Sam Raimi and Marvel Cinematic Universe timelines. In the case of his second Jameson, who made a surprise cameo at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home — revealed that “the film was in the can. I don't even know who had the idea. It was Amy [Pascal] or was it Jon [Watts]or if it were someone else.Hey, we could throw in some J. Jonah Jameson here. I mean, why not take JK and see if he does it.'” The actor was, however, surprised by early decisions to alter Jameson's distinctive look, with the Far from home team explaining, “Well it's… you know, yours was so beautiful and so, like, it felt like a period piece and da da da da da. And this is, we're modernizing the franchise and if he's not a journalist, he's a media mogul of this and that.”
