Fan-favorite Ted Lasso reportedly won't be returning for season 4

Ted Lasso may be close to returning, but not everyone is apparently coming back for season 4. Puck's Matthew Belloni recently shared which fan-favorite character is unlikely to return to the Apple TV+ series.

According to Belloni on X, “Phil Dunster, who plays Jamie Tartt, is unlikely to return for season 4” Ted Lasso due to scheduling conflicts with other shows. This makes the actor the first cast member reported not to be returning for season 4, which is very close to getting the green light from Warner Bros. Television. Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Walton), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) and Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins) are so far the only actors 100% confirmed for Ted Lasso Season 4, with WBTV currently in the process of finalizing new deals for co-creators and stars Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) and Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard)

Ted Lasso Season 4 is finally here

Ted Lasso debuted in August 2020 on Apple TV+, following Sudeikis’s eponymous college football coach as he travels overseas to coach an English soccer team whose owner secretly hopes his inexperience will lead to failure. However, Lasso’s popular and optimistic leadership proves unexpectedly successful, with the Premiere League soccer team, AFC Richmond, finishing runner-up in his final year as manager.

While Ted Lasso was initially developed with a three-season arc, talks about a fourth season of the acclaimed comedy series began before season three began airing on Apple TV+. In February 2023, Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group, revealed that season three ends with “a little bit of a door being thrown open. If we're fortunate enough to do more, we can continue.” He reiterated those comments in January 2024, stating, “I mean, you watched the finale, there's a little bit of a door that could be thrown open if necessary. I wouldn't put a period at the end of that sentence right now.” He also confirmed that there were ongoing conversations about how to best bring Ted Lasso let's go back to the small screen.

With Lasso returning home to America in the season 3 finale to spend more time with his son, the writers will have to find a believable enough reason for the fan-favorite character to return to Richmond. The new season could be set a few years after season 3, allowing for new circumstances to send Lasso back across the pond.

When would Ted Lasso season 4 arrive if given the green light?

If there are no issues with talent insurance and production scheduling, Ted Lasso Season 4 could go into production as early as early 2025. From there, it’s possible that season 4 could debut on Apple TV+ in late 2025 or early 2026, roughly two years after season 3 finishes airing on the streamer. Of course, this will all depend on whether Sudeikis agrees to return as the beloved title character.

The first three seasons of Ted Lasso are available for streaming on Apple TV+.
