Michael Connelly is one of the most prolific authors of crime fiction and detective novels. To date, Connelly has published nearly 40 novels and numerous book series that share an intricate and unique universe. From Harry Bosch from Bosch book series, by Mickey Haller The Lincoln Lawyer book series, many of Michael Connelly's books have been successful and adapted to the screen to critical acclaim. And now it's time for another Michael Connelly character to take center stage: Renée Ballard.




Renée Ballard is Michael Connelly's latest character, an LAPD detective who usually crosses paths with Harry Bosch. Ballard has a hard time within the LAPD at first, as she has to navigate a lot of infuriating bureaucracy, blatant misogyny, and political agendas. This makes Renée Ballard similar in many ways to By Bosch non-conformist detective, Harry Bosch. The new Bosch spin-off series will focus on Renée Ballard and her unique journey within the LAPD. And while there’s still a long way to go before the highly anticipated TV series debuts, there’s already plenty of casting information and news to keep fans excited.

Renée Ballard's new series has already provided plenty of casting news to keep fans excited for the new series. Maggie Q will play the protagonist Renée Ballard, an LAPD detective who runs her own Open-Unsolved Unit. Maggie Q began her career in Hong Kong action films as Jackie Chan's protégé and quickly rose to stardom, later starring in American productions such as Mission: Impossible III and the fourth episode of the Hard to die film series, Live free or die. But many will agree that Maggie Q's biggest and most iconic character came when she landed the starring role of Nikita on the CW series Nikita.


In addition to Maggie Q, many stars will take part in Renée Ballard's next series. American Horror Story star John Carroll Lynch, who many may remember as the now iconic Twisty the Clown, will star in Renée Ballard's untitled series as Thomas Laffont. Laffont is a retired detective who returns to the LAPD to help Ballard with her new Open-Unsolved Unit. Thomas Laffont will play one of Renée Ballard's greatest allies, a kind and experienced detective who Ballard can count on. Courtney Taylor, who many may recognize from her recurring role as Erika in Abbott Elementary School or like Mia in the Netflix series Neonalso joins the cast of Renée Ballard's series as Samira Parker. Samira is a former LAPD officer who has lost faith in the system, but is willing to return to help her former mentor, Renée Ballard, in the Open-Unsolved Unit.


The latest additions to the cast include Michael Mosley, known for his role as Pastor Mason Young in Ozarkswho will play Ted Rawls. Rawls reluctantly joins Ballard's unit to keep an eye on her. Rebecca Field, who starred opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt in The list of customerswill play Colleen Hatteras. Colleen is a volunteer who relies heavily on her intuition in Renée Ballard's unit. Disney's Victoria Moroles Liv and Maddie and MTV Teenage Wolfwill give life to Martina Castro, a legal intern. Magnum PI Amy Hill will play Renée Ballard's grandmother, Tutu.

The new Bosch spin-off series will follow Renée Ballard as she works in her Open-Unsolved Unit within the LAPD. The Open-Unsolved Unit takes on cold cases that have been all but forgotten by the LAPD. Renée Ballard will be dedicated to making sure every victim gets justice and will form her own team made up of mostly volunteers and retired cops. Renée Ballard's new series could be the series that opens the doors to a larger and richer television universe for Michael Connelly's novels. Just like the legendary procedural show Law and orderMichael Connelly's procedural dramas could become a universe of their own, sharing multiple crossovers and interconnected storylines. Characters like Terry McCaleb and Jack McEvoy, other main characters from Michael Connelly's novels, could also make their on-screen debuts within the shared universe later on. And while Netflix's The Lincoln Lawyer does not share the same universe as Bosch and Renée Ballard's upcoming series, since the shows are on two different networks, Connelly fans are still hoping for a bigger crossover event, which could be possible one day if Renée Ballard's new series helps solidify Michael Connelly's television universe.


Renée Ballard’s next series does not yet have a confirmed title or release date, but is currently in production. Bosch: Legacy Season 3 will introduce Maggie Q's Renée Ballard in the season finale before Maggie Q takes over as the lead in her own show.
