Luffy first meets Jinbe when he breaks into Impel Down, quickly befriending the former Warlord of the Sea. Together they escape the prison and head to Marineford, where Jinbe eventually saves Luffy's life by blocking one of Akainu's magma punches.. The attack leaves a scar on Luffy's body but also shows the nobility of Jinbei's sacrifice. After the Fish-Man Island arc, the Straw Hat captain asks Jinbei to join his crew, but he declines the request because he still has something to finish. Luffy accepts, but states that Jinbei would be considered a Straw Hat anyway.

Jinbe plans to formally submit his resignation to Big Mom, because what is a simple Emperor against the future Pirate King. When he informs her of his decision, she tries and fails to steal his life using the Soul-Soul Fruit. By the end of the Whole Cake Island arc, Jinbe bids farewell to the Straw Hats again, stating that he will rejoin the crew on Wano Island.
