Ed Helms on Why Grandmas Love Hangovers

The spicy comedy of 2009, The Hangover apparently appeals to people of all ages, according to one of the film's stars. Per Entertainment Weekly, Ed Helms, known for his role in The officeHe played Stu in the film, and recently guested with Dany Carvey and David Spade Fly on the wall podcast and he also said “Old ladies” love disgusting movies.




“I was in a hotel lobby maybe a month or a week or two after it came out,” Helms explained. “There was a group of old ladies, literally grandmothers, sitting there talking about bits of the movie and how funny they were. “I remember thinking, ‘OK, this, and then of course there are all the frat guys who love it,’” he said.

Helms thinks the mass appeal is due to the “a character who behaves horribly, so much so that he is a source of great inspiration to young men, who would like to become party animals.” However, “then the next morning, they're mortified by their own behavior. So, that's what makes it redeeming for the older ones who are like, “Oh, these sweet boys have gotten themselves into trouble.” Helms said. He argued that as long as the shady antics are accompanied by subsequent regrets, they can appeal to the masses.



Can Hangover be made today?

Helms admitted on the podcast that he hadn't seen the 15-year-old film in “quite a few years,” but said he didn't know if the film could be made today. “My gut tells me it would most likely be a little tricky, tonally.”

Known for his crude humor, the film involves four friends, played by Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Justin Bartha. The group, after a night of crazy partying in Las Vegas, wakes up with no memory of what happened the night before. For example, Helms' character is missing a tooth and there is a free-roaming Bengal tiger in his hotel room.


The after-effects of the hangover The success led to two sequels, The Hangover Part 2 in 2011 AND Part III in 2013. A fourth part of the franchise is not in the worksbut Cooper has said he wouldn't hesitate to return for a fourth installment in the series.

“I probably would. The Hangover IV in an instant,” Cooper said in 2023. The actor said he enjoyed working with the director Todd Phillips, who recently directed Joker AND Joker: Madness for Two. He added that he also enjoyed working with Galifianakis and Helms. But, Cooper said, “I don't think Todd will ever do that,” stating that he feels Phillips has walked away from the franchise.


Hangover writers working on new female-led comedy

The after-effects of the hangover co-authors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, who also wrote Bad mothers, they are working on a new all-female comedy called Weekend at the Spa. The film will star (Leslie Mann)Pregnant), Fisher Island (Now you see me), Michelle Buteau (Girls), and Anna Faris (Scary movie).

The new film will follow three best friends who go on a long-awaited spa vacation in Palm Springs. However, when their friend, Mel, shows up, chaos ensues. Lucas and Moore are also directing the film. A production start date has not yet been set. Weekend at the Spa.
