According to EA's latest generative AI brigade, it has been reconfirmed that the third game in Respawn's action-adventure Star Wars trilogy is in development. According to EA, it will be the “final chapter” of the trilogy, following 2019's Jedi Fallen Order and 2023's Jedi Survivor.
The game’s existence was first confirmed by Cal Kestis actor Cameron Monaghan at an Ocala Comic Con panel. “We’re working on a third one and we’re in the process of doing that right now,” Monaghan said, which is about as simple a confirmation as one could ask for. It was also confirmed twice via Eurogamer this February, following news of layoffs at EA.
Laura Miele, EA's head of entertainment and technology, said the following during the company's investor day presentation yesterday:
“More than 40 million Star Wars fans have connected with Cal Kestis and his journey to become a powerful Jedi. Respawn is working hard to bring players the final chapter of this exciting story.”
In the same series of presentations, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said generative AI was “at the very core of our business,” and EA showed off a formidable creativity machine.
Respawn's previous two games were both well-received, but Jedi Survivor was plagued with performance issues on PC – although the latest patch appears to have helped with that.
Last September, series director Stig Asmussen left EA after a decade at Respawn, despite telling IGN earlier in the year that he “always” saw the Jedi games as a trilogy.
“An undeniably entertaining Star Wars sequel with a suitably epic story and clever combat, but there's a lot of unnecessary tedium to go around,” was Alice Bell's (RPS in peace) verdict in her Jedi Survivor review. My own verdict is that I only lasted about an hour before I had to change the spoken language from English because I didn't like the main character that much. I also decided after an hour that I didn't want to play at all, so don't listen to me. Very good lightsaber slashing, though!
