BioWare has said that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be released this fall, leading many to speculate that it will be released in September. That seems unlikely at the moment, as EA has said that the RPG will be released in its fiscal third quarter, which begins on October 1.
EA's fiscal year starts in April, with Q1 ending on June 30 and Q2 ending on September 30. Its latest fiscal calendar has The Veilguard due for a Q3 release, sometime this year, according to Eurogamer, but it's set to release in October or later.
This assumes the game doesn't experience any further development setbacks, and the fact that BioWare still hasn't set a specific release date for the game means that any predictions about its release are foolish.
Edwin watched a 45-minute episode of The Veilguard back in June. He found it to be more of a “single-character action-RPG” rather than a true party-based RPG in the vein of its predecessors, but was also quite impressed with its world, combat, and characters.
I certainly mourn the less kinetic, more strategic Dragon Age, but after watching the first trailer I’m more excited than I thought I would be for Veilguard, which makes the whole thing seem like the origin story of a C-list Marvel team. It’s worth remembering that Inquisition is often too knotty and obtuse for its own good: its combat system is clunky, its story is a classic example of mid-game bloat, and Skyhold, while a majestic and impressive place, is a management nightmare where you’ll routinely forget where the crafting tables are after 70 hours. If Veilguard can strip down the unnecessary without reducing party members to side characters, this could be the soft reboot this long-dead RPG series needs.
Veilguard has a long way to go towards its current release, perhaps reflected in the fact that we’ve written about it 48 times since 2018. It was going to be a live service game for a while, now rebooted as a single-player focused RPG, previously called Dreadwolf. It’s a pleasant surprise to see positive vibes about it despite it seemingly being only a few months away.
