Christian Bale's Method Acting Addressed by The Bride Co-Star

Chameleonic actor Christian Bale plays one of his most bizarre roles in the upcoming sci-fi monster movie The bride! by writer and director Maggie Gyllenhaal. In the film, Bale plays the role of Frankenstein's monster.

Peter Sarsgaard, Gyllenhaal's actor husband who plays a detective in The bride!addressed the project in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter. With Bale, Sarsgaard confirmed that Bale stayed in character while on set, even when the cameras weren't rolling. That's nothing new for Bale, who has a reputation for being a Method actor, but Sarsgaard says there's a big difference when it comes to the acclaimed actor. While other actors will be arrogantly Method, Bale stays in character because he takes his role so seriously that he can't help himself. Sarsgaard also noted how much the set was enhanced by the presence of both Bale and Gyllenhaal, who previously worked together on The Dark Knight.

“With Christian Bale, he is a phenomenal actor who has such devotion,” Sarsgaard said. “Watching him on set… you know some actors try to stay inside. You have to call them by their character's name and all that bullshit. They talk with accents the whole time. It's not like that with him. He just can't help but be in it. It's not a choice. It's not a demand. It's just the way he is. That changes the set when you have that kind of leadership with him and with Maggie.”

Christian Bale is a phenomenal actor, with great devotion.

Sarsgaard also hinted that there are “big dance numbers” in The bride!a film he also described as “at times violent” and “wildly romantic.” While the film's script was written by his wife, Sarsgaard also shared that he believes it's simply the best script he's ever read to this point. No footage from the film has yet been released to give fans a preview of how it will end, although an image was shared that provided a first look at Bale as Frankenstein's monster.

The Bride! is the best script Peter Sarsgaard has ever read

“It’s the best thing I’ve ever read,” Sarsgaard said. “To me, it’s both a great coming-of-age movie and a great teen movie. It’s what everyone hopes for and tries to achieve when they make a great movie. The people involved in every department—Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, Annette Bening, Jonny Greenwood who does the music, Dylan Tichenor who edits, the list goes on—are not only great people, they’re real individuals with style and taste.”

The bride! will be released in theaters on September 26, 2025.
