Blumhouse's upcoming horror film follows the studio's lowest opening in nearly a decade

The Sci-Fi Horror Movie Fear is the latest disturbing offering from Blumhouse Productions. However, the film appears to have been a box office flop, becoming one of the company's lowest-earning projects.




According to Variety, The film was expected to earn $3.7 million in the United States over the three-day opening weekend. The projected gross for the four-day Labor Day weekend was approximately $4.4 million. Fear It ultimately grossed $1.3 million on its first day, with $400,000 coming from Thursday night previews. Internationally, the film earned $2.3 million from 19 different markets. The total is Blumhouse's worst ticket gross ever Jem and the Holograms earned $1.4 million in 2015.


Fearwhich received largely negative reviews from critics, is written and directed by Chris Weitz. The film is produced by Columbia Pictures along with Jason Blum and Weitz under their Blumhouse Productions and Depth of Field banners. The film currently holds a terrible 21% critic rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. However, it seems to have done better with viewers, as evidenced by its audience score of 51%.


AIA is a terrifying technological story

According to the official synopsis, “Fear follows Curtis Pike, a marketing specialist who brings home a new smart home assistant called AIA for his family to try out. Initially, Curtis thinks the program is similar to Amazon’s Alexa, but he soon realizes that AIA can do much more. It creates a reward system for children’s chores, orders healthy meals, and even flags potential health problems. However, the AIA has a darker agenda and eventually becomes possessive towards the family..”


The film features a talented cast that includes John Cho as Curtis, Katherine Waterston as MeredithKeith Carradine as Marcus, Lukita Maxwell as Iris, David Dastmalchian as Lightning, and Ashley Romans as Sam. Havana Rose Liu appears as Melody / the voice of AIA. The film was first announced in December 2022 with the title they listenProduction began in Los Angeles that same month.However, the first trailer with its final title, Fear, It was only released in July 2024.


Blumhouse is also working on a Wolfman reboot that should hit theaters in 2025The film is directed by Leigh Whannell from a screenplay he co-wrote with Corbett Tuck, Lauren Schuker Blum, and Rebecca Angelo. Based on the 1941 film of the same name, it stars Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner. Jason Blum is a producer, working under his Blumhouse Productions banner in association with Motel Movies.

Fear is currently playing in theaters worldwide. Wolf Man will open in theaters on January 17, 2025.
