Blue-eyed Samurai is an Emmy winner again!
According to Deadline, the critically acclaimed samurai series won the Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Animated Programhaving previously won three Emmys last month for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, for Storyboard, Production Design and Character Design respectively. Blue-eyed SamuraiThe Emmy competition included The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, X-Men '97AND The Kingdom of the Scavengerswhile previous honors this year include six Annie Awards.
After its first season was met with rave reviews last year, Blue-eyed Samurai was quickly renewed for a second season, though no release date has yet been announced. According to Michael Green, he and wife/co-showrunner Amber Noizumi are currently “in the middle of writing the script” for the second season's plot, further praising Netflix for the creative freedom they've been given in designing its narrative. As for how far they want to go Blue-eyed SamuraiThe story, Green revealed, “We're currently planning three seasons. We have a second season pickup, hopefully a third season will exist because we definitely have plans for that. We're envisioning three seasons right now. I think we said four once in an interview, maybe with Collider, and suddenly it became 'the tradition!' Things you say when you're not used to being interviewed.”
Blue Eye Samurai is a story of revenge
Set during the Edo period in Japan, Blue-eyed Samurai follows Mizu, a biracial warrior on a mission to kill the four white men who raped her mother and ultimately conceived her, facing off against all manner of assassins, political figures, and prejudice against her blue-eyed appearance. Along with the story, much of the show's praise has gone to its violent action scenes and distinct CG animation, with Solid metal gear creator Hideo Kojima calls it “the best anime of the year!”
Part of the mindset behind this style of animation, as Noizumi recalls, was to make a series that would appeal to non-animation fans as well, including “people who watch The crown OR game of Thrones but I would never watch an animated series [or] Anime that they might have a certain affinity for. That was part of our conversation, but it had to be something new and different that people would try and see what it was all about.”
Notable Netflix animated releases this year include: Terminator Zero in August, as well as Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, Arcane Season 2 and Zack Snyder's Norse-inspired show Twilight of the Gods later this fall. Also, another very well-received samurai drama, Hulu's Shogun — based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell — currently leads the Primetime Emmy Awards with 25 nominations.
Blue-eyed Samurai Season 1 is available for streaming on Netflix.
