Agatha Harkness Makes Marvel's Vault of Shadows More Terrifying Than Ever

Marvel Comics Crypt of Shadows is coming back and a Marvel Cinematic Universe icon is officially taking over as host of horrors.




From Marvel Comics, the fan-favorite horror anthology, Crypt of Shadows #1, returns in 2024, with all-new stories for Halloween. This year, Agatha Harkness leads the festivities as she guides readers through a myriad of landscapes, each with a haunting story to offer. For readers interested in what Agatha might be up to before Crypt of Shadows' upcoming release, Marvel promises that everything will be explained in the title's final story by the current creative team Scarlet Witch series – writer Steve Orlando and artist Claire Roe.

Together with Crypt of Shadows, a story from writer Benjamin Percy and artist Raffaele Ienco that will take Man-Thing away from his native swamp and onto the high seas alongside none other than the former King of Atlantis himself, Namor. Writer Jason Loo and artist Carlos Magno have crafted a story that pits longtime Spider-Man foe Kraven the Hunter against Marvel's original Werewolf by Night, Jack Russell. Finally, writer Chris Condon and artist Djibril Morissette will introduce MCU monster hunter Joshua Jovan, who was introduced in Marvel Studios' Werewolf at nightfor the first time in the world of Marvel Comics, as he steps through the Last Door and ends up right in the clutches of Scarlet Witch.

The Origin of Marvel Comics Crypt of Shadows date back to 1972, when the first issue of the horror anthology was published just a few weeks before Halloween. Featuring stories from acclaimed creators like Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Don Heck, Crypt of Shadows contained some of the best horror stories comic book fans of the time could find. While the vast majority of these stories were reprints from earlier titles such as Adventures in Terror AND Journey into Mysterywere still a major part of the 1970s horror revival. The original series ended with its twenty-first issue published in 1975.


Crypt of Shadows returned more than four decades later with the release of Crypt of Shadows #1 in January 2019. Despite not being released close to Halloween, this new Crypt of Shadows has maintained the anthology series style of the original with three all-new stories from writer Al Ewing and several acclaimed artists. Since then, two Crypt of Shadows one-shot anthologies were printed in 2022 and 2023 respectively. In the last two years, Crypt of Shadows It was hosted by Victor Strange, the undead brother of Marvel Comics' Sorcerer Supreme.

Crypt of Shadows Issue #1 goes on sale October 16.
